Russian Lit

I want to read a couple Russian novels, preferably from the 19th century but I'm really not picky. Where should I start? I was thinking about picking up some Dostoyevsky, but want to make sure this was a good idea. Thoughts?

Ilf and Petrov's Twelve Chairs (1920s) is a great read, it really captures the essence of Russian humor. It is one of a few books that dares to poke fun at the government, since this is sort of a big deal in much of Russian/Soviet history. If you want to read Dostoyevsky, I recommend The Idiot, it is my favorite of his works that I've read. I can't give you many more 19th century recommendations though, most of my studies were focused on the Soviet era and political topics.

I would suggest We by zamyatin. Its the book that gave the inspiration to 1984 and many more books during that time period.
