So this guy wants to charge me $45 to paint my i4's purple and he clear coats them a few times as well.

Aren't you a painter?

yes i am i wouldn't pay for that if i were you its really easy to do. those goggles I'm wearing are the ones i painted back in Oct. or Nov. and they still look great. all i used was a plastic adhesion promoter, hobby paint for the color (rattle can) and went an automotive topcoat. put a few coats of all of them. electricians tape is the best to use holds on rubber well and has a fine edge to them.

I'm honestly scared I will mess it up, and I have no idea where I would get automotive paint in the same color as the spray stuff. Wal Mart?

Also, does the automotive stuff come in a can?

the automotive is just the clear coat that you can buy at any checker auto or Auto zone store. as for the hobby paints you can pick those up any were i used testors for mine cause they had the color i want in a simple rattle can. I was beeing lazy and didn't want to get out my air brush and have to clean it.
And Yes the Clear coat comes in a rattle can. Go to a hobby store and they will have a ton of colors to choose from.

if you have been playing in the mask make sure you wash it really good to get all the paint residue off it. ifyou miss any it will cause adhesion problems.. I wash mine with soap and water first let is sit over night and the next day give it a lite wipe down with laquer thinner before the i put the adhesion promoter. the Top coat and Adhesion promoter can both be bought at the automotive store. if you have some high spot you want to knock down like seam lines and stugg use a 400 grit paper and use some air and a tack rag to clean off the dust. the prep work that goes into it will be worth it in the end. i spent damn near 1-2 hours just on prep before i even start any spraying. let the adhesion promoter dry at least a half and hour to an hour depending on what what the back of the can says. when you get to the color let the coat dry around 10 min inbetween coats that way you dont have to sand and in between. let the color coat dry for at least 30 min. so when you spray the topcoat the color coat won't seperate. if yo let it dry over night it no biggy, just make sure the goggles is free of dust before you topcoat. do not sand the color coat it will change colors if you sand it. the tack rag becomes your best friend cause it gets all the little dust off but dont press two hard.
