really it all depends on how fast you complete your upgrade training. Also its going to vary base to base and how much the AF and Security Forces needs handlers.
If you are at LEAST (and im going to stress DEPENDING ON YOUR BASE) an A1C you can APPLY (might not get but can apply) for a lateral train into K9 or CATM. The requirement i have been told is minimum 3 years/SrA for either position but then again how bad they need people is going to dictate whether you can be A1C or not. If you are **** HOT then you might have a chance. I got a 94 on my EOC and I dont even know if I will get to go as an A1C.
Find a K9 guy and ask him how to get in touch with the kennel master. Make friends with a few of the K9 guys first though. Talk about it and express interest. They will all tell you to volunteer to clean the kennels, train for bites, and just other stuff you can do as a straight leg to help for the lateral train.
If you show motivation you cant get it as a young airman it is possible.
How long it takes is up to you. I volunteered for a deployment so i took my sweet *** time doing my CDCs. Bust 'em out and you will get that 5 level faster
