That's just what most groups do when a new thread is started. Lots of people like to see just how much they posted in the prior thread.

Also some groups have some pretty strict rules for minimum posts per thread in order to stay in the group and this is a quick way to remove people from the list. We're a bit more lenient here but I do go through every once in a while and if someone hasn't posted in the last couple versions of the thread I'll remove their name.
