That depends on what you need. Do you have specific needs that might require different applications? For example, if you do a lot of web designing, or is this just going to be a check email, browse the internet, chat with friends?

Try typing this into a terminal:

Code:
sudo apt-get install amarok libxine1-ffmpeg phonon-backend-xine
The best way to figure this stuff out is by going on Google and searching for things like "install amarok ubuntu" or looking through their documentation. It's going to be a lot of reading for your first few days/weeks, but after that you'll just get it. It's really nice to because there's no more going to websites to download the latest version of a program. You just update your whole computer by entering one command:

Code:
sudo apt-get update

Sorry, I should have mentioned what I was looking for, and what was wrong with the program.
I managed to work with Rhythmbox rather than Amarok.

Well the programs I was use to using on Windows that I miss are:
MSN Messenger
Lightroom and CS4
uTorrent
Rainmeter (for widgets and customization)

I think thats pretty much what I used.

Pidgin should be able to take care of MSN Messenger.
Lightroom/CS4 is the one thing that Linux really doesn't have an alternative to. GIMP is the closest, but it still doesn't match Photoshop in my opinion. If you really need Photoshop, you could try running it under WINE, but that's a whole different can of worms.
uTorrent alternative is Transmission, or rTorrent if you're willing to learn the shortcuts for it since it's command-line.
Rainmeter can be replaced with Conky.

I'd also through in Deluge for torrents. It's a lot like uTorrent.

Just wanted to point out that this is not enough to update your whole computer. This will only update the internal package database. You also need to issue a
Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade
to fetch and install the packages, and possibly a dist-upgrade depending on the state of things.

Trying to decide what Linux distro I want to install on my laptop and my desktop. Not feeling Gentoo this time around, and I'll be using it in a college environment. I'm stuck between Mint, plain ol' Debian, and Fedora. I will partition a small bit of my laptop's hard drive for Windows 7 for my engineering classes, just to be safe. All my devices have appropriate packages in Linux. Anybody have some reasons why I should choose one distro over another?

Edit: Scratch that, I just had to run modprobe -r on both the broadcom module and the tg3 module, and activate them again. Weird.

Hey guys I'm trying to triple boot OS X, Vista, and Ubuntu. During the instructions it says to install grub on the same partition as Vista/Ubuntu are on.

One partition for OS X
One partition for Vista/Ubuntu

I have the instructions googled on how to install grub, but I can't figure out which hd(?,?) to install it to. Anyone know the right way to discover that?

Code:
sudo fdisk -l
will display your partition table. However, you'll probably want to partition like so:
sda1 -> OS X
sda2 -> Windows
sda3 -> swap
sda4 -> Either begin an Extended Partition and place the rest of Linux under it as Logical Partitions or all in sda4 (I prefer to have my /home, /, and /boot all mount to different partitions, but that's me.) Ubuntu's installer should automatically install GRUB for you.

Edit: This is assuming there's one hard drive involved here.

alright you limp dick ****ers, here's the count.

I have a asus eee(1001p) incase anyone was curious. I used to have a 1000ha which dual booted mint as well as w7 and I really liked it because all I really did with it was take notes and the netbook seemed to run faster on the linux than it did with w7, also used less battery.

Anyway, I got this new eee and the first thing I did to it was rip off the w7 starter that came with it and threw on some w7 ultimate as well as linux mint 8. The reason I choose linux mint 8 was because mint 9 is missing a bootloader or some **** in the .iso so it cannot be installed via a usb drive. It can be ran like a live cd but It can't be ran like a traditional OS. I even went as far as thinking about throwing in a 16gb sd card and just booting off of that but then every time I sit down for class to take notes I have to change the boot order and ****. **** that I keep it real and atm i can't afford to buy a usb cd/dvd drive.

So with the mint8 everything worked just fine except for my wifi card. The light is on on the body of the netbook so I know that its physically on but the OS doesn't recognize it. My guess is that the problem is that when linux mint 8 was built the card didn't exist so all I really need is a driver to make it work.

I did some digging on the google machine and found a driver on this site.
http://www.atheros.cz/

its the first card on the list, the 2427.

I downloaded the package from this page but its pretty much for an intermediate user. the instrutions want me to build the driver and install it via the terminal. I've used a linux terminal on my android phone to navigate the os and delete some applicaitons. I've also used some cmd in the windows machines and **** but nothing like this. Does anyone have any links which would show me how to do something like this. Like a gay *** youtube walk through or something.

It's a traditional compile/install, e.g.
Code:
$ make $ make install
But I can tell you it looks like big balls; you need to have parts of the kernel source it appears. I would look hard to find a binary distribution or something in your package manager that can get the job done. Technically it's not hard to that hard to compile that but it's not really I path I would suggest you go down. Perhaps some other netbook users in here would have a better suggestion. Frankly I'm surprised it doesn't just work out of the box.

Agreed. It's so much easier to just install it through the package manager. However, I think that particular card is supported in any kernel that is >=2.6.32.16 with ath9k enabled, according to this. If you find a way to update your kernel, Pete, then it may work.

I'm guessing this is after you install it on your hard drive after installing along side Windows 7. Windows 7 is difficult and installs the boot loader to a separate partition. I made my partitions using a Linux live CD before installing everything on my laptop so that didn't happen, but if you follow this you might be able to get it working again. You might have to have a Windows 7 disc to repair the MBR for Windows' sake before you go through the steps in the aforementioned link.

***NOTE: Grub starts drive/partition numbering from 0, so the first partition on your first hard drive will be (hd0,0) in grub.

Negatory, when i try to boot into the arch iso off of my usb drive. I know all about the bootmgr ****ing up after installing alongside windows, I have had it happen to me before a while ago but I got it fixed on my desktop.
