What could possibly 'break' in Ubuntu? Windows isn't stable and gave me soo many damn problems, hell my mom has XP Pro and she doesn't like it either, she would switch to Ubuntu but all her programs for her business are windows or mac.

All the Windows users are like "I just installed Ubuntu and it's so amazing, I'm never going backing to Windows!" and then something doesn't work the way they want it to and they go right back lul. I was just making fun of what most new users do.

I have Windows 7 on my T500 right now... 32bit...

But I'll be putting 64bit on it once I get an SSD (64-80GB) and plan on dual-booting with some form of linux.

Main reason is I'm getting into programming a lot and taking an operating systems course over the summer, and it does deal with Unix and figure I might as well finally learn this ****. Also wanna look more into OpenGL so I can see how different implementation wise it is from DirectX and porting games with OpenGL over to Linux or OSX.

Quote:
This course presents an overview of modern operating systems, in particular Windows and Linux/Unix as implemented on modern PCs. After an overview of what an operating system is and does, we cover the following: organization and design (the kernel and various subsystems), process management (creation and management of processes and threads, including an introduction to multi-threaded programming), networks (the TCP/IP stack and the organization of the Internet), interprocess communication, process synchronization (locks, semaphores, and methods to avoid deadlocks), memory management (hardware and process views of memory layout and demand-paged virtual memory), file systems, and security and protection (viruses, worms, and Trojan horses).
So my question I guess to anyone who's done it, is it easier to dual-boot by installing Linux first or Windows first? Honestly doubt there will be any issues either way but if it saves me some hassles and ends up with the same result I'd rather learn from someone else.

I usually do:

1) Partition with a Linux Live CD
2) Install Windows and let it omnom the MBR
3) Install Linux (where most of them will recognize the Windows install automagically and add an entry to the bootloader so you can boot it.

For some reason I want to say that Windows 7 is a little bit nicer to Linux if you have Linux installed first, but I don't have first-hand experience. The method outlined above has always worked quite well for me.

Sounds reasonable... I shalt do that...

And I guess the next thing is what Linux distro to start with? I used Ubuntu for a while.. so I'll probably go with that

Not a bad place to start if you want to just install and start getting things done instead of hacking at the install for a few days to make it usable.

This summer I will be working on a project at BU where we monitor the performance, power, and thermal impacts of different scheduling algorithms for parallel workloads. I get to build a system with the proper performance counters in place, collect statistics about the different schedulers' behaviors from these counters, and try to reduce the heat and power usage with the resulting information.

(Intel CPU, Linux environment)

Bump

Would anyone happen to know whether or not that they fixed the Atheros wifi card problems yet?

Problems? I wonder if the user is concerned if Madwifi has been integrated in to releases. I believe it (or a derivative) has been.

Is it? I've had it on my desktops and laptops for the last four years. What works for me clearly doesn't work for you.

Well, last time I installed Ubuntu, the wifi Atheros card I have in my laptop wouldn't work/apparently wasn't compatible at the time, and I was wondering if they fixed it or not yet.

We can't answer that question if we know nothing about what card you have and what problems you were experiencing.
