Movies have been sucking lately, No good epic movies?

There hasn't been any good movies lately. Are there any upcoming epic movies coming out? I remember Lord of the Rings was epic as ****. Dark Knight was good too. But other than that...

Taken was a great movie that came out recently, but yeah, the quality seems to be slipping lately. Some good-looking titles are lined up though.

There are many more fantasy books that could make kickass movies. Steven Erickson's Malazan series is the first to come to mind.

The Matrix. Like it or not, its going to go down in history as an iconic, revolutionary work of cinema. Pirates of the Caribbean could be ranked up with India Jones in my opinion, as well, since neither were perfect.

Looking towards the future for 'epics', not 'blockbusters' or simply great films I'm at a loss, as well. Mammoth projects are a rarity, and with this whole recession business I can't see a company committing to a 6 year project costing hundreds upon hundreds of millions of dollars.

Ragss I doubt it. the first movie is deserving of that comment but after that it went downhill quick, so I wouldn't call them this generations Indiana Jones or Star Wars.

I'm giving that title to LotR

Indiana Jones flicks are shallow adventure movies. Based solely on face entertainment the Matrix series has Indy matched and vastly surpassed. If not for the audience being faced with overly verbose exposition of intellectually and philosophically challenging themes and topics, the series would be more widely accepted. Regardless of all of that, the series sparked an entire fashion subculture and brought about a cinematic gimmick that won't ever go away called bullet time. You think the Matrix went downhill fast? Indy culminated with stupid mother ****ing aliens for christs sake.

Still, I don't think the matrix trilogy will have anywhere near the longevity or lasting fame as LotR will or Indy/Star Wars has.

You of all people should know that quality and popularity are very disconnected. And yea, The Matrix has heavily influenced cyberpunk culture, but it's not like droves of people worship the matrix now, not to mention 15-20 years from now. I do find your comment "If not for the audience being faced with overly verbose exposition of intellectually and philosophically challenging themes and topics, the series would be more widely accepted." interesting, since without that the movies would be nonexistant.

and you know crystal skull doesn't count, but even then it took almost 30 years for the series to **** itself whereas The Matrix did it in 4.

P.S. The Matrix was not the first movie to use a "bullet time" effect.

LoL I think Mad Max is the only thing on there that really qualifies as "older ****" is you so eloquently put it

This time of year is always stale for movies. I mean last January the big movie was Cloverfield, and that sucked. Usually there's one or two films that get everyone excited about seeing movies again. The last movie I watched in the theaters was Pineapple Express and I had a good laugh. There were a couple movies in December I wanted to check out, but never got around to it.

I'm looking forward to Watchmen, which shows up in March.
