The last pin on the IC Chip is ground.

Pin 9 is VCC, Pin 18 is Grnd

Well this is true. pin 18 is ground, but that is only relative to the board's circuit itself, there is no earth ground or "true ground". There can still be arcing, but either way, he didn't have the batteries installed when he install the chip, so this doesn't matter anyways. This chip may be bad, causing some sort of over current. Oh, one thing I didn't think of, whats the condition of the board like: dusty, paint etc (besides the burnt part) There may have been dust there or something shorting out a part of board as you switched it on.

But even if it did arc that would not cause a random jump in current as the chip has nothing to do with voltage regulation.

Right. I was stating two different possible causes. I didn't do a good job of stating what I meant. Is that not how it controls the tension on the stack, by increasing the voltage to the motor? Either way I think your best

Ah I was wrong, I said that that 3 prong square thing was a transistor before. In fact it is a dropout regulator (LM2940CT-12) Not sure what that means exactly but it seems as though it regulates the current. Well I've attached a picture of the board. The part that is burnt on your board is under the regulator, is a capacitor. Seems like a pretty big one too. Still looking into the part number
226
25R
627

can't seem to find it though. I'll keep looking. But I think its a 22uF capacitor, like one of these.
http://www.amazon.com/AVX-Surface-Ta.../dp/B001IE82P2
Seems like a hassle to fix it yourself, might be better off just buying a new board.

Try using the stock chip and see if just the virtue chip is fried. If the virtue just the chip is fried, your in luck as it has a lifetime warranty and you can send it in for a replacement. If the stock chip doesn't work in there, you have fried the circuit board and will ned a replacement. I believer they are around 30 bucks.

If you don't wanna shell out 30 bucks for the board, you can try the 22uF cap. I have to check on that actual cap P/N.

You could try it, but I would personally just purchase a new board unless your handy with electronics.

Agreed, I wasnt familiar with SMT Devices until my third year of electronics engineering. Unless you can find someone to do it for you, just go get a new board.

Its not there fault that you installed your chip wrong and fried your board.
