You may have noticed we have had a couple periods of bad slowdown randomly over the past few days. Tony and I have been working very hard to try and track down what was causing the issue, and we believe we have found it, after a lot of digging around.
Apparently, something running on the Amazon Elastic Cloud
was running amok and causing our traffic to spike way up, past the point that our webservers could handle.
In non tech talk, cloud computing
allows people to write programs to run on large networks of computers, such as the one hosted at Amazon. Anyone can rent time on these servers to do whatever they want (to an extent). My guess is that some enterprising youth out there was trying to write a web spider, or some similar app on the cloud to index PbNation, and in the process initiated what basically boils down to a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack.
We've blocked the hosts in question, and our traffic appears to have subsided to normal levels. In a way, this was a blessing in disguise since it gives me some insight into what our servers can and can't handle traffic wise, but it obviously caused a major inconvenience to everyone.
We'll continue monitoring the situation to make sure things run smoothly.
Thank you for your patience!
