Hmm, how should I put this...it's kind of like when you’re playing Halo 3 and you die from what seems like some bull****, and you say “there is no possible way I should have died from that.” Then you go back to the game film and realize you died perfectly legitimately, it was just too fast for you to see. Too bad real life doesn’t have that feature, then we wouldn’t have stupid threads like this.

I think the severity of an incident that goes in one’s favor mistakenly introduces the question of divine intervention a lot of the time. For instance, I was washing a big pile of clothes the other day and by chance noticed my wallet in a pair of jeans just before I started the cycle (which I would have started a minute earlier and most likely missed my wallet if I hadn't banged my knee on the dryer). Relatively similar odds to your story, but no one is claiming divine intervention. I didn't smile up at the sky and thank some unseen being for my swollen patella, and therefore dry wallet.

When you insist that God purposely saved your cousin, you are also insisting that he purposely did not save my friend Andrew last year, or the thousands of others that died through pure accident. In that sense, **** you and **** your god.

Again, I ask why does every instance of unexplained intervention, even assuming it was actually intervention, have to be "DIVINE"?

Just because you don't understand why something happened doesn't automatically mean God did it. There are an infinite number of possibilities, both natural and supernatural, that one could conceive of to explain any event.

How do you know it wasn't a super-intelligent extraterrestrial ethereal four-toed wombat that warned you not to run over your cousin?

He's not arguing that the wombat is God. There could be only 1 God, but still have room for an omnipotent wombat that likes shiny things.

If there is a correct religion, you would know by now. I don't think the divine would make it a mystery.

Yeah, anyhow. And it doesn't even have to be omnipotent, just really smart, and friendly. I think the four toes are important too, but I'm not sure. I'll have to do some more research.

acatually, the God of the Bible is the first god we have in history. so theoretically he's the best kandidate for being the only true God.

well, yeah. if he created the world and wrote the first chapter in Genesis then yeah, first God. unless you can think of one that would come before Genesis...

That's assuming Genesis occurred in the methods illustrated within the Bible.

Historically, the "first god" would most likely be attributed to the Egyptians if we consider "god" as is commonly associated nowadays. Otherwise, the Mesopotamians and Chinese may be attributed to founding the first "god(s)" that we know of. Since their god(s) have been inscribed in pieces which predate the origins of the Bible which describes the God of Abraham, wouldn't that be the likely candidate for the true god?

fixed

AscreamingYeti: Do you know how many different gods man has created? I could name over 20 right now but I'm not going to. Each god is dreamed up to fill holes in understanding, then once that hole is filled through scientific explanation, the god(s) lose their meaning and are passed off as mythology. Why do you think Christianity or the several other dominant contemporary religions will be any different? "Christian mythology" will most likely be a commonly used term in the future.

Was the bible initially meant to be interpreted and not taken at face value, as most Christians claim today? That idea didn't arise until science explained how most biblical scripture is simply untrue.

Science be praised
