Thanks again to everyone for your thoughts and prayers. They are helping tremendously.

Will, I need that outing more than ever bro. This is definitely a struggle.

To all:

My dad went to the doc again today. They are afraid, because he is so weak that he will succumb to the leukemia during Chemo treatment. They said they would not order it, but it was his choice to receive the treatment or not. He said he wanted to do it, so he still has some fight left in him. His Chemo treatment will begin Monday at the VA hospital in Indianapolis.

He is 55 years old, though if you saw him in his current condition, you would think he was more like 80. So different than the consummate soldier I have always known him to be. He can barely walk, and only eats soft foods like yogurt and jello. He had ear surgery a few weeks ago because his ear wasn't draining properly and my understanding is that during that procedure, they knicked some important tissues in that area that deal with memory and verbal skills. He begins talking and then sometimes will immediately stop talking and not remember what he was saying. He also had Bells Palsy a few months ago and it hasn't totally went away, so half of his face looks like he went through a stroke. It just sags and he can't control keeping his mouth closed. My sense is that he won't be here more than anotehr month or two, though I hope I am wrong and he lives 30 years or more longer.

I can't believe this. He is so young and he has already been through alot. My grandfather came over a little while ago. He is 80 and looks much healthier and better than my dad. His mind is just as sharp as it ever was.

I'll talk more later.

-Charles

Here is a little bible verse that i read when my grandmother was in bad shape, and it helped me to cope with the pain, and the heart ache that it brought. it is psalm 23 from the king james version of the bible. I would repeat this in my mind over and over again, and it would almost feel like god was sitting there watching over me and my family and reading the verse in unison with me, and it made me be able to cope with the pain of seeing my grandmother like this.

Psalm 23:1-6 "A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever."

By reading this, it let me know that when my grandmother died, she would be in a better place and would always be watching over us, and that even though she may walk through the valley of death, god is with her, and watching her doing the things that need to be done, and that it is what is best for her, and when it is her time to go, that god will take her to a better place, and that she will be able to rest in peace, and live the way he wanted us all to live. It is also a prayer of strength, when you read it, it makes you want to get up, it makes you want to do something, almost like god is there doing everything with you hand in hand, and consoling you. I not only used this for my grandmother, but i now use it in times of great stress, or times when my head just isnt in the right place, i say it before swim meets to prepare my self mentally for what i am about to do, and is an all around good bible verse to remember, and I hope it brings as much comfort to you as it brought to me in my times of hardship.

Good luck Charles, hang in there man.

I like this verse too. It's pretty well known, and for a reason.....

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

I know how you feel my grandfather died a year ago after a serious car accident but he lived for more than a year after the docters said he would last a day or two
my grand mother (his wife) died a couple of months ago from a stroke
my grandpa died 5 years ago from lung cancer and died before they could even give him his first treatment

so I'll definatly keep you and your family in my prayers and hold on to him don't let a day go by without seeing him because I sure wish I would have

Update

My dad started chemo Monday and so far is handling it ok, but the first couple of days usually aren't too bad. He finishes this round Sunday afternoon and then they will evaluate him and begin another round. Keep praying!!

I can't thank everyone enough for the well wishes and prayers you all are sending out for my dad and my family. The support my family and I have received in this trying time has been awesome to say the least. I am humbled by each of you.

I will update again as I get news. I am back in NC, but I will be going back up to Indy in a couple of weeks or sooner if needed.

Oh yeah, I took some pictures when I was in Indy and one has me wearing a Colts hat and my dad wearing a Patriots hat. He was born in Maine, so he has been a Patriots fan all of his life. We have good times when they play each other or just making comparisons each year. I'll post that pic as soon as I find the cord to my computer.

My condolences to you on the loss of your father Mark. It is definitely a challenge to keep my head on straight during this time.

Anything is possible man. My fiancee's grandfather was told there was almost no chance he'd see the morning an no chance he'd see the end of the week. He lived like 3 yeas longer. They were like 495% off. He was like 85 when he died.

Ya'll stay strong for the fight. I'll be talking to the big guy for you and your dad.
