There are not different gen minis only different gen parts...

Is there a way to identify it with out tearing the gun apart? Something on the box would be good, but possibly under the battery cover. I'm supposed to go with someone on Wednesday to buy one that was "won in a tournament" and is still in the box. I have one already and thought that there was a way to tell the difference with out taking out the internals.

no - because as stated there are no gen1/gen2 minis, just upgraded parts that all came at different times. so taking of the grip cover may reveal the updated 1.3 board... but it doesn't mean all the other parts have been updated (user could have installed some updates or none at all, or the mini may have them all on there to start... you'll have to check)

I know that but wouldn't all of parts have been changed by the time they came out with the updated board? I know there was probably a transition between the 1.1 board and the 1.2 board. I have a 1.2 with all updated parts for example. But thats still besides the point. Is there a serial number cut off or an estimated one for when they stopped using the original version of the internals? I don't want to sow up at this guys house and cut the plastic off the box and proceed to disassemble the gun only to find it's a questionable one.

Even if it is a "questionable one" it's a quick, painless and relatively cheap fix. The common problem parts are identified in this v1/v2 thread that I believe is stuck above this thread. Parts to bring them into compliance (aside from the 1.1 board) are less than 20 dollars, total, if memory serves. In addition, there are people who used first version parts without any problem. This issue has been blown way out of proportion by people who seem to know nothing about the mini.
By all means be cautious. But if it's got a cardboard box, you're probably fine.

alright. The cardboard box is good as a general indicator. Thanks. Thats what I was looking for. I know it's not black and white, but it's good enough.

It all depends on what kind of paint you normally shoot. However with a .689 you should be alright with most paints.

It should have generation two parts, as there are no generations of guns.

no, it has to have the ridge, also the poppit spring is stronger to be able to push back the poppit under force... v2 works just fine v3 is just better... its like a car, the normal car is fine, but a sunroof is just a added bonus...

The problem with Minis is that even though the design by that Simon is beautifully brilliant, the execution by Invert/Kee has proven to be dreadful.
In the 3 years the marker has been out, there have been many instances of subsequent versions of the marker coming out with defective parts whereas that part had historically worked fine in previous versions (bolts, bolt guides, poppet, transfer tubes, etc.) I attribute that to their poor quality assurance of the components they order from suppliers (who apparently are switched very frequently). Someone at Invert needs to thoroughly QA all deliveries to the assembly point. I realize that these suppliers are located overseas (Taiwan and very likely P.R.O.C.) so QA is not an easy task.

No, not really. If your mini is that old, its possible those parts are pretty worn.

if u want to tell them apart in store simply look at the box
metal case - generation 1
black box - generation 2
white box - generation 3
ive also heard all matte finishes are generation three not confirmed on that though
