Can't we all just get along? Yeah they cost more and are better on the road. But they have more power, get better mileage, and are more capable than previous years. Don't get all hung up on the changes.

Remember it's the soccer moms driving the jeeps that let us play with ours.

Just enjoy your jeep, let everybody else enjoy theirs.

Hey, I'm not hating on the JK Unlimited itself....just the fact that it is usually driven by middle-aged women who don't wave, and have no idea what constitutes "off-road" use.

Seeing one in a Rubicon is equivalent to a swift kick between the legs. Especially since what makes it a Rubi will never be used.

4:1 crawl ratio
electronic sway bar disco's
lockers front and rear
lower gears
etc etc

I would kill for half of those....Yet the soccermom staring me down as I wave at her is thinking I'm the moron.

Anyways....has anyone here ever trashed a heim joint on trail?

No, never seen it done either. Good heims are incredibly strong. Something else will surely fail before a heim splits.

little tech question i hope one of you can help me with:

i have an 89 cherokee. when i drive with the a/c on, it will click off after a few minutes. but it clicks off EVERYTHING. turn signals, wipers, radio. pretty much everything but the headlights. the jeep still runs just fine when everything turns off, and it will click on in a minute or 2 if i turn off the a/c.
i called my local jeep dealership but everyone i talk to only knows crap about the new jeeps. nothing pre 90's.
i checked the relays, fuses, spark plugs, blah blah bah. everything is fine. someone told me it's a ground wire. but which one/how would i check?

(i'm an idiot when it comes to working on vehicles. so try to dumb down anything fancy you might have to say.)

doesnt matter when i turn it on.
and now today on the way home from fishing i was driving with the windows down (no a/c so i could listen to music), and after about 20 minutes when i would turn on the turn signal, the radio would click off. then instantly turn back on when i turned off the turn signal.

So I blew up my pinion bearing in my dana 44 today, anyone ever replace one of those before? Do I have to take my whole axle apart of can I just take the front yolk off and replace it from there?

You've got some gnarly electrical gremlins going on. There should be no connection between the radio, turn signals, and AC. I would start with inspecting as many electrical connections as you can. Pull the dash and see what's up. Check as many grounds as you can find to make sure they're tight and solid. I would also replace every relay and fuse. Are you sure your battery and alternator are good? Double check. I would also get familiar with NAXJA and the Jeepforum XJ tech section. You'll have a much better chance of running into people that know what they're doing there. Search those forums and if you really can't find anything, post up and tell them in detail about your problem.

I'm guessing you don't know how to setup ring and pinions so yes, you've got to pull the shafts and pull the carrier. The gear pattern will need to be reset, which isn't a novice job.

Pulling the shafts and carrier is cake. It's setting up the gears that you wouldn't be able to do. Make sure they are well versed in diffs and gear setup. Your run of the mill mechanic likely won't be. Experience is what counts in that area.

Agreed that experience counts but with the proper tools it can be done quite well by yourself. Granted I still wouldn't do a Dana axle in a driveway.

The assumptions I was making were 1) he asked so he probably doesn't have any gear experience and 2) it's a Dana. I think the prerequisite to setting up gears, especially in a Dana, is a very healthy understanding of everything under the diff cover and proper bearing preload, backlash settings, etc. After that, get the tools and start setting up gears.

I've seen a 6" short arm kit for the 99-04 grand cherokees before, but can't seem to find it now. Anyone know who makes it off hand?

Ok I'm looking for a set of 37" tires I'm between the km2's and mtr-k's. Anybody have a reason to go with either one?

I'm leaning toward the mtr-k only because it's $15 a tire cheaper.
