unfortunately, if the gas prices stay low, the american car companies will start selling more SUVs methinks, and thereby perpetuate their failing business model.

SUVs are not the reason they fail.

Gas was down to $1.50 in NJ when I left yesterday. Unfortunately, I left for PA, where gas seems to be perpetually at $2.00 a gallon.
I have to agree though, SUVs and Trucks were big sellers back when gas prices were low and the economy was doing well. They were making what the people wanted. Vehicles like the Ford Explorer and F150, as well as the Suburban/Tahoe sold like hot cakes. The switch to cars was only one of the things that hurt them. Along with unions and a car industry that is currently in the slumps across the board.

Even with the drop in gas prices those behemoths of a vehicle still get give or take 15 mpg depending on the type of driver.
Also, gas around me is about $2.40 and I'm not planning on paying such low gas prices much longer.

Even if you drove 15,000 miles a year at 15 mpg that's 1,000 gallons over a year which would be $2,400 per year. Sorry your town sucks and hasn't caught up with the rest of the nation.

Big SUV's has been GM's "thing" for a long time. Suburbans and Tahoes have always been a huge seller.

The dealer itself does not make 20 grand...That's just absurd...
Usually around this time of the year they give specials to clear old inventory. With these tragic times they are just trying to keep their head above water. If GM survives but the dealerships don't its a wash. Dodge/Chrysler are offering a BONUS just to sell the car and free up some money. The smart dealers are taking that bonus and knocking it off the price of the car. They still make the original mark up but gave the consumer more incentive to buy.
I have an 08 PT Cruiser with 6,000 miles for sale. I paid 9,900 in the middle of the summer, the dealer is selling the same exact car SAME EVERYTHING for 9,800 brand new.
