This is true, but we were also taught that a Master Sergeant can also be called top, as a 1SG would be called. Never called them that myself, but have heard others do just that.

Different ranks in the military is very strange to figure out...but if it gets much deeper in here, we may have to whip them out and measure them to see whos bigger.

Are we talking about jrotc, rotc, or what? if its jrotc i agree to an extent. If its rotc I disagree. anything Msgt and above you call them by their rank. to me anything from airmen basic to senior airmen is an airmen. Thats just how the Air Force is and when youre used to the standards you use the same ones when speaking with other branches

Yep. I know over here at the Academy we call officers on the ship by their rank, or sir. Cadet officers are referred to as sir..because anyone senior with a position has a 2 Bar and up rank...then there are juniors with the squadleader positions and some select sophomores like me (haha) have petty officer positions which are the pre-cursor to squad leaders..then again this is an academy.

You missed one rank - PV2 - private
also the warrant ranks.. which go like this
WO1 - sir
CW2 - chief/sir
CW3 - chief/sir
CW4 - chief/sir
CW5 - chief/sir
But you could also call them 'Mr. _______'
Both 1st and 2nd LT are addressed as 'lieutenant'
All generals are addresses as 'general'
hopes this helps clarify it all

Yeah I saw something that says to call CWO2-5 "Sir" I wouldn't be caught dead calling a CWO mother****in 5 "Sir"...chief is much more appropriate.

I work with a retired CW5 and he loved to be called Mr. or Chief. Though his last name is Rogers...Mr. Rogers...he caught holy hell in his Warrent School!

On base at least i always call them sir. I was told to by my recruiter. I was brought on base a couple times, and was strictly told "If you ever see anyone in uniform they are SIR. Unless they say something else, THEY. ARE. SIR."

So i call them 'sir' until i actually join.

Tom I'm going to make you call me Sir till you get your butter bar. Just a fair warning.

a weird thing that I don't like over all but I know it happens is when people see a CWO5 w/ or w/out the bursting bomb with their rank they get called a Gunner. If I was a Gunner and earned that rank I'd be pissed to have another CWO5 called that. But when you get to that high of rank in the CWO it makes a little sense.

Oh. Well if you're instructed by your recruiter, that is a bit of a different story.
