Enlist or ROTC

Right now I'm doing Army ROTC. School never really was my thing, but I decided to come to college on a ROTC scholarship. I love all the military stuff involved in ROTC, but I'm not digging the school side. I would rather just do the military full time. I was just wondering what some of your thoughts on this is? I know if I stay with it and get commissioned as an officer through ROTC, I'll be better off money wise and have a college education.

You could always do an enlisted term and then re-enlist for college option or do green to gold later on... but honestly if your overall goal is in the end to become an officer or get a college degree you would be wasting your time. Enlisted life in the Army will not be the same as the 'military stuff' you do in ROTC.

Yeah.. Well the plan is majoring in Criminology and branching MP. I just wanted your guys opinion on whether or not I was being a ******* for considering this. I do like getting paid to go to school, that's pretty sweet. We'll see how this year goes.

I was doing that, minus the scholarship, but school just isn't for me right now. I just dropped out and I will be enlisting next month. Maybe I'll go back to school in the future, it's just not what I need now. Just do what you feel you've gotta do and it should work out.

What rank do you go in as if you enlist with one year of college? Is it E3?

Well if you have a 4 year degree you get E-4 if I'm not mistaken, but IDK what one year worth of credits will get you.

If I were in your position I would probably try and get through college, just for the fact that you have the scholarship and might as well use it. That said, I completely understand where you are coming from, within 2 months of starting college I decided I didn't want to be there, now I am in the Air Force DEP waiting to finish up the semester and to get my orders. I haven't second guessed or regretted this at all, yet at least .

Do what you feel is right for you now though, I know in my heart that postponing college and enlisting is the right move for me. There will be money for school waiting for you at the end of your enlistment and the opportunity to get some school done while your in, so either way you can get your degree and serve. Another thing to consider is what do you want to do in the service and what do you want from it.

Hope this helped

I'd rather stay in Missouri if I'm doing the college route.

Cstasny - Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

Well, if you enlist, you only have to do 2 years of ROTC, instead of two. And thereafter you're qualified to receive the GI bill, the Kicker, and a drill pay if you're a reserve component, which totals over 800 a month.

I enlisted in high school so that i could save time in college. In this case, 2 years > 4 years. inb4paradox.

You can get E-3 from that. However, its only helpful for a little more pay in your first year. It doesn't help with future promotions since they have a minimum time in service requirement (someone who comes in at E1 will be eligible for promotion to E4 the same time you are).
Just some background, I dropped out of college after 2 years, enlisted as an E3, got out as an E5 to finish college. I am considering applying for OCS when I graduate.

We are talking about the Army... 30 hours for PFC (E-3) and SPC (E-4) for a bachelors degree.

you go in as an E-3 if you have 3-4 years of JROTC

i know what you mean man, i want to go to college so i can become an officer, but i dont think im gonna want to do the school part. It's gonna suck but it definatly has to be worth it. getting paid more and having some sort of authority

There are a few ways to 'qualify' for E-3 upon enlistment.. but honestly a recruiter can just sign a basic task or pt sheet and give anyone the promotion. jROTC/college credits/eagle scout be damned they can put it in for you even if you don't have those if you just hastle them. This is one of those things recruiters don't want you to know.

Yeah, that's the only reason why I'm probably going to stick it out in college. Better pay when I get out, a guarenteed job, and you get to experience college. Although going to class and doing the school work blows.
