can someone help me out with this?

im planning on going to norwich military academy after i graduate.

im very interested in special forces so i wanted to know what would help me better for achiving this goal

their are two different classes that i think will help a good amount. artillary, and cold weather warfare. which one do you think is better prep for special forces?

thanks

seriously, if you want to be SF why would you go to college? I guarantee you it will be harder to get SF training as an officer.. you have way more options as an enlisted man. If you want to be a shooter, going to military academies isn't going to do squat. Being an officer is more of a 'managerial' position.

see i said the same thing, but the truth is your not going to get a shot at SF right out of basic. if your an officer its harder to pass your tests, but you get paid way better and whatnot. for me this issint a dick size contest. i want to make this a career

classes you take in school are probably not going to help you very much.. you guys honestly have an entire class devoted to "artillery"?

There's an 18X option that essentially is a "shot at SF right out of Basic" for all intents and purposes.

http://www.us-army-info.com/pages/mos/special/18x.html

You can't choose SF as your branch right out of college/military academy when you get commissioned. You'd have to do another branch for a few years, get some experience, etc. before you could attempt it.

Like I've said before, 18x is a way to get people to sign 6 year contracts.. and of course most people don't make it - then they are stuck with 6 years as an 11b with no other options. If I REALLY wanted to have a decent shot at SF with a minimal obligation, I would enlist as an 11B on a short term contract with a 'intent' for SF tryout (there would probably be a bonus too). There are SF recruiters who travel around to every base looking for candidates, and they are recruiting pretty heavy right now. You would probably be able to get an SF tryout slot as little as six months from arriving at your duty station.
Like the guy above said.. officers don't ever have much of a choice where they can go.

i asked my friend who was a green beret and his son went to norwich, they said that he had first pick at ranger shcool and SF stuff, he took ranger and got it. my recruiter said that as an officer its harder to get into SF but you have first pick because SF officers are always in demand, im only asking what field would be better because on the 18x page on goarmy.com it said something about being interested in artillery.

but in afganistan they need soldiers that are traine din cold weather warfare and things to that nature due to the mountains. im just wondering what would be more of a help. perosnally im more interested in the cold mountain warfare class because of 10th SF. but i just wnated to ask you guys.

and yes norwich does have an artillery club, not exactly a class i dont think.

You get fast tracked as you complete training.

The poster above said it right, you're better off enlisting 11b for a shorter enlistment and working inside to get into the SF pipeline.

I would agree with the enlisted option also, though I have different reasons.

well, if you enlist in the Navy, they will contractually give you SEAL, EOD or SWIC as a rate out of meps, assuming you can pass the physical tests and score high enough on the ASVAB. Theys send you to boot camp with that rate and all you have to do is not fail(way easier said than done)

already talked to the seal recruiter. didnt like him, im an army guy. and if you graduate norwich you are an officer. its an ROTC program
see the thing with the navy that is dangerous for me is that if i go to SF or ranger school and dont pass i can still enjoy being in basic or airborne infantry. i would be miserable stuck on a ship doing that stuff.
i guess marines is an option but i still favor the army

edit: i read the post wrong.

bottomline, SF operators are mainly enlisted, especially when it comes to actually doing the missions. Officers are more administrators and managers of the units.

Going to a military college would be great for your military career. But if you're career goal is to be an SF operator, college is pretty much irrelevant and you need to join as enlisted infantry and work your way into the pipeline. You seem to want two different things.

there is only 1 man on this board that can accurately answer this and he is most likely out doing some high speed crap right now. He's a Ssgt and knows his stuff from the SF side of things in the Army, I'm sure when he gets on again he'll be of some help.

My buddy who was very motivated, fit, very "HOOAH!" and was in AROTC just recently dropped out of Norwich. No one was expecting it. He said that it's not worth it to put up with all the bull**** while at school so he decided to leave and he enlisted.

So just consider that military schools are not going to be for everyone. Sorry this doesn't pertain to the SF questions but I just thought I'd share this.

maybe he just couldent cut it?

juse because he was a cadet and you and him thought he was very HOOAH dosent mean he was fit to be an officer.

anyone who can read can go and sign a contract. not everyone can be an officer.
