How to save money at big box stores

I'm not sure where I read it, it may have even been on here. But anyways this is still pretty good information.

At big box stores like Circuit City (which won't be around much longer anyways) and Best Buy. If your shopping for something on the shelf, there are "open box" deals. These products come with the original manufacturers warranty, as well as the stores regular return policy. Its up to the store how much they give off, but its a good way to save yourself 50-100$.

Today I got a 32" TV for 100$ off.

Or you can have a friend buy it, return it, then go the next day and buy the returned product. Remember the serial # or make a cosmetic scratch on the back of it.

That would work, but they way they are able to afford the discount is by charging a restocking fee to the person origionally returning the item.

It was always my understanding that "big box" means Sam's Club or Costco.

Those are good examples of big box stores but not for electronics. Best Buy is big box for electronics and the likes.

I thought big box meant selling in bulk thus facilitating the need for big boxes.

My understanding has always been that big box retailers are any large chain store that buys their products in bulk, and then through economy of scales are able to sell the products at a cheaper price than a traditional mom & pop retailer which operates on a small scale.

One buys in large quantities (BOXES upon boxes of stuff), where the smaller retailer buys items in small quantities.

So Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Circuit City, K-mart, Sam's Club, BJs, Circuit City, Toys R Us, Kohls, etc are all examples of big box retailers.

There is another way to get money off the price... ALWAYS ask what is the lowest price they can do on ANY item including open box items. I was buying a digital camcorder that was open for $100 off the normal price and then asked if they can do any better on the price and they took 10% more off. I first realized this when I bought a 50" plasma tv from best buy a few years back. I was looking at the tv for over an hour trying to decide and asked the salesman just for fun if he could reduce the price if I bought a surround sound system with it. He asked the manager and came back with around $150 off the tv and $50 off the sound system. Dont always buy at the shown price...
