My understanding has always been that big box retailers are any large chain store that buys their products in bulk, and then through economy of scales are able to sell the products at a cheaper price than a traditional mom & pop retailer which operates on a small scale.
One buys in large quantities (BOXES upon boxes of stuff), where the smaller retailer buys items in small quantities.
So Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Circuit City, K-mart, Sam's Club, BJs, Circuit City, Toys R Us, Kohls, etc are all examples of big box retailers.
