Normal?
I don't have any upper body strength and was kind of embarrassed to go to the gym because of it. Instead I wanted to do pushups in my room to build up some strength and than move on to the gym at some point. I bought "The Perfect Pushup" to help me out and so far I can feel its effects on my arms and my chest. The problem is I also feel it in my stomach area which had me a little worried. Is it normal to feel strain in this area when doing pushups?

wow seriously? Just go to the gym, there are other people who are way out of shape. People don't pay attention to you. I thought the same thing, but it's really just you making a ***** *** excuse for not getting into shape the right way. If you really want to get in shape you will go to the gym. That's why people are there, to gain muscle and lose weight. Your not the only one

Yeah, no one really cares what you're doing in the gym unless you're in their way or using things incorrectly like curling in the squat rack... Just go in, move some iron and leave.
As for push-ups, you're forced to hold your core tight so your stomach doesn't just sag to the ground. If you're not used to much activity or core stabilization, you're going to feel it in your core for a while until you get a little more trained.

Noone cares what you lift in the gym. It isn't about the numbers. It's about pushing yourself. Just go. You won't regret it.

I HATE HATE HATE this line of thinking. One of my friends was like this this summer. He is like I don't want to bench because I am not good at it/weak whatever he said.
Well how do you think you are going to get good at it if you never practice it. Lifting is just like everything else, if you want a bigger bench press, the best thing to do is bench press.

dude, I go to the gym with my gf. last week, I managed to bench press 50 lbs, and I was really proud of myself. How am I ever going to get to "Respectable Numbers" if I never go? magic?

I'm not saying I am not going to end up going to the gym. Its part of my plan, just later on. I knew I was going to get a lot of **** for doing what I'm doing.
Thank you flarkey for answering my question.

doing pushups isn't going to do much of anything to help your bench press. Checking your ego at the door and going and bench pressing will get you a respectable bench much much much faster than pushups ever will

Are you just saying the amount of weight you put on the bar is 50 lbs? Add the weight of the bar (45 pounds for a standard barbell) to the number.

indeed. I don't think there is any way you can only bench 45 if you include the bar. I mean my friend is way way way more scrawny than you and there he can even bench like 115.

push ups will do you some good but i wouldnt wait to long. your shoulders and chest will benefit and be used to working out so it will help. and yes you will feel in in your abs. well i do lots of pushups i will feel in in my abs and my abs are strong as ****.

Nobody cares what's going on in the gym till the smoking hot 16 year old volleyball players walk in with their short tight little shorts on and start doing squats.

When I first started working out I could barely curl 20s. Like barely. It was pretty embarrassing cause all of the other guys were doing like 30s and 40s. But you just have to work up the strength and confidence. Who cares what other people think about it.

The Perfect Push-Up is free if you have a set of dumbbells I have to get up on DBs to do push-ups because my wrists are ****ed from borderline carpal-tunnel after years of typing for hours a day...but I definitely feel a weighted or even a bodyweight push-up a lot more when I use heavy enough dumbbells to where I'm raised up enough to dip down as though I'm doing a reverse bench press. Standard palm-down push-ups just don't work all the muscles as well IMO.

So you hit the gym for a year and they'll come in a year later and say damn that guy is fly (or a total beefcake)
