MILES Training

Well, I read a lot of books about military. (A lot of books) because i like them better than watching movies. Everybody i know thinks that the military trains with airsoft or paintball. I have never read about this, but i think i know they do use occasionally. I have read about people using MILES, and i mentioned this to someone i know, and adult who was in the military and he said MILES sucks, is that true? If that is what do they use to train? Thank you.

A paintball scenario field I go to a few times a year(camp blanding, best venue in the world) is a MOUT site the government rents out for the weekend for paintball use, and they have the rounds (orange and blue) laying everywhere, buried in sand berms what have you. so they obviously use them during MOUT training..

One of the reasons miles "sucks" is because it can't shoot through leaves or camoflauge cream.

Both MILES and simunitions suck, the only real good training is blank and live fire with pop up or stationary targets. Any force on force is going to be unrealistic anyways since soldiers will behave in a totally different pattern than when live rounds are being fired at them. Live fire has the most realistic 'feel' to it, and helps with real world shooting skills. However, a unit has to be incredibly well drilled to even attempt an iteration since it is so dangerous.

blanks even suck ***....all a blank is good for is dirtying up a wpn. and causing them to jam.

Yeah but they are a good step to prep for a live fire... we would do a dry run, then a blank run, and then move on to live fire drills if everything looked good.

Why are simunitions a bad training method? Is it just because of the rediculous amount of protection you have to have with it? The headgear and all?

what if there was a lower velocity round that could be stopped with something like a paintball mask/goggles?

Simunitions suck because people who are in it will not take it as serious as they would live fire, etc. Mentally, it's not good training.

exactly. When you are playing paintball (i'm assuming everyone here does) are you actually afraid of being killed? same concept.

Miles gear was by far the biggest joke ever. Good idea, horrible, horribe execution. The only type that even semi worked at all, was the vehicle miles gear (bradleys, m1s and such), and even that was still highly unreliable.

It has pros and cons...

Pros-
Long, acurate, engagement range.
Intigrated simulated warfighting system, Soldiers, Vehicles, and Aircraft.

Cons-
Most units never zero and secure the transmitters.
Don't have enough 9 volts and fail to test MILES gear.
Soldiers cheat with "ray of death" or use field made MILES keys and switch to never die.
The Laser lacks the ablity to penitrate ANYTHING.
Most units don't PMCS teh MILES gear so broken units NEVER get fixed, they just get put back in the case, counted, and reissued (still broken) to teh next unit.

Overall it has problems but its still teh best thing out there for force on force training. Sim rounds are good but like PB have serious lack of range issues makingthem worthless for anything other than CQB.
