I can appreciate the comments on the storage. I work as our company's virtualization and storage administrator. A lot of people dont realize there is a huge difference in the 300 GB internal drive for your PC and the 300 GB SCSI drive you put in a drive array. You start buying drive arrays with 12 or more SCSI drives, you're talking $20,000 up to $100,000+. You can buy 12 300 GB drives for your PC for probably around $1,000. I just had to comment because we've been working alot lately with performance tuning our environment.

I'm not sure of the specs of your old server but that is quite a supercomputer. I know this site is popular but I would not think you would need that kind of computer to a website. Once again I could be wrong. I have a server that runs gaming servers with 2 quad cores, 4 gigs of ram. Our game servers are pretty full a lot of the time and we don't even use up all of our resources. I would think those would be more labor intensive on the computer and bandwidth. With 300 or so players you are sending and receiving roughly 100 packets every second for every player.

But anyways, nice upgrade, I can definitely tell a difference in surfing speed. Besides the computer did you do any upgrades to the networking side of the computer?

We're testing out some new MySQL patches, but for the most part everything is the same. All of our servers have 100mbit external interfaces and gigabit internal interfaces.

As a network admin, i appreciate the effort to make pbnation better and faster. I also love the people that question the new gear, but do not run with the ASM swag on their username

just out of curiosity why do you run one server and not cluster it, you would get better performance, not single point of failure. Though ndb makes me want to smack it sometimes

Mostly because MySQL doesn't have decent support for replication much less clustering. Furthermore, even if we could run a master-master or group of slaves, we can't really afford to have a ton of slaves hanging around when a single machine can handle the load.

Sure, there's a single point of failure, but we have 2 hour hardware replacement, it's not going to be the end of the world if we have to take the site down for a bit to swap out something that fails.

Defiantly will say mysql has nill support unless you go enterprise ( one down side of open source). But the metrics of running a few hetis boxes (or other not great harware) compared to one monster box are there, even when just looking at io. 2 hour hardware garuntees are nice though

Its a made a pretty noticeable difference to me. For the past few day PBN was running kind of sluggish.

Only 600 gigs of storage?!?! I thought it was bigger.

:EDIT: it's running in RAID, and now I know which kind... Only 600 gigs is surprising.

Either way, I now heart PBN even more.
