New Server Announcement

Last night we migrated to a new master database server which has increased reliability of the site and sped up site performance quite a bit. That means we are now running the site on a new, faster server so we can all enjoy surfing PbNation faster than ever.

For those that are curious, here's the specs of the new upgraded PbN hardware you are now enjoying:
  • SuperMicro X7QC3 Mainboard
  • 4 x Intel Xeon 7320 Quadcore 2.13GHz CPUs
  • 16 x 1GB Hynix ECC DDR2 FB-DIMM
  • 3 x Seagate Cheetah 300GB SCSI 15k RPM HDD
  • Adaptec 3405 RAID Card

Our graphs of the site's performance are already showing a small but measurable difference. As you browse the site you may find a noticeable difference in the speed. Since we are now running even better hardware than ever before, Tony has an announcement coming as well.

The team here at PbNation thanks you for your understanding for the brief but unavoidable downtime last night and hopes you enjoy the new iron!

Our graphs are showing a small but measurable difference. Sitting here browsing the site? It feels a lot more noticeable.

It's quick enough for me always, can't really say I feel a difference though.

I do have to say nice specs. Probably cost you guys close to 10k for that setup. You guys running IIS or Apache? What database houses pbnation threads, SQL MySQL? What ever you guys have and did pbnation is running great.

While the site does move considerably faster, you should've looked into an XSERVE as that hardware is nothing short of the best. Plus... The fact it can run OSX & Windows native (Considerably faster than a PC of equal specs running the same system) makes it a Win-WIN.

Either way, Kudos to you guys upgrading. 'Bout time!

XSERVE is great if you need an office server and have to blow a budget but for production server just need thin client and cluster of inexpensive hardware. I am interested in how you address SPOF and load balancing?

I have always had good experience with seagate, I hate Hitachi though.

Why do you guys just have 900GB?
You should get 2TB, bump the rmp down to 10,000 and increase everybody's avy limit.

This is a *database* server, not an image server. We don't need a lot of storage on it. Avatar size has nothing to do with the amount of space it takes up on the server.

For example, if people default to 45 posts per thread, and each person's avatar is say, 20kilobytes, that's 900kilobytes (nearly a megabyte) of avatars per page load. That's a ton of data to push to people on slower connections, or people who might be browsing on mobile devices.

Not to mention the fact, we're talking about SCSI harddrives here people. Not Serial ATA. SCSI hard drives aren't even available larger than 300gb.

Also, we're running RAID 5, that means with 3 300gb hard drives we have 600gb usable, not 900gb. One drive is lost to parity.

Ahhh, makes sense.
Isn't there a display avatar option for slower connections?
Idk, I don't really care about the avy limit but it is pretty small compared to other sites.
