Downtime 09/17/08
PbNation will be down for a period of up to six hours starting at 1:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, September 17th.
During this maintenance window we will be migrating to a new master database server which should hopefully increase reliability of the site, and speed up site performance a bit.
The maintenance may not last for the entire window, but it will take several hours to dump our database, move the data to the new machine, and reimport the data on the new server. During this period of time the site will be unavailable.
For those that are curious, here's the specs of our new hardware:
- SuperMicro X7QC3 Mainboard
- 4 x Intel Xeon 7320 Quadcore 2.13GHz CPUs
- 16 x 1GB Hynix ECC DDR2 FB-DIMM
- 3 x Seagate Cheetah 300GB SCSI 15k RPM HDD
- Adaptec 3405 RAID Card
As much as we hate downtime, this migration was unavoidable, and will hopefully resolve some long standing issues for us.
The team at PbNation thanks you for your understanding and hopes you enjoy the new iron!

Just Curious,
what raid will you be running?....
Not sure how big a forum is, but 300gb...depending on the raid formation, doesnt seem like alot....unless you just ran them together = 900gb

We'll be running RAID 5 with no hotspares, so we'll have ~600GB usable. The forum db isn't THAT big.

At some point our slave database server will be the same hardware as this one, but not for a little while.

I like to let my arrays run for three to four weeks before use in any critical service. I would usually write a small script to recursively copy several large files, then delete them. Sure was nice to have the lab space, along with the time to do this. (Aaahhh, the good old days, spending someone elses money!) Stinks to have a "new" drive fail after just a couple of days in service.

Heh, we do a little burn-in but not anything huge. Funny enough, one of the drives failed during provisioning, and was replaced prior to me even logging in for the first time.
