What Major Besides ROTC?

I will be graduating form high school this may and had just about made p my mind to enlist in the marines afterwords. Well when i told my mom she was not happy at all and went into rant about how "i need to at least TRY college before joining the military." She does not have a problem with me enlisting just feels that i will never go to college if i don't at least go for a while before i serve. At first i totally blew it off and just figured i would do whatever i wanted. However, i have thought about it and am really considering it.......it might not be so bad to to have a little fun, work on getting an as close to perfect PT s possible, and in general just being around for a little longer on the off chance that i never come back.

What would be beneficial to major in besides ROTC? I really don't know if i will get tired of it and enlist after the first semester or if i will like it and go all the way through my 4 years in the classroom before doing my 4 in the desert o somewhere of the sort.

You don't Major in ROTC its just a class.

and you cant just test the waters with ROTC, once you're in, you're in, you're in a legally binding contract

At my school you can't major in MS unless you are in the ROTC program.

I don't think thats true. ROTC at Massachusetts Maritime Academy (Military College) is non-binding until Junior or Senior year. So, you can "test the waters" freshman and sophomore year and see how you like it, until the Junior year you have to be in or out.

ROTC at my school is non binding till the junior/senior year...

Anyway, your major really depends on what you want to do. Personally I'm going to shoot for an International Studies and Political Sciences major at my school, maybe doing a double with either English (jag) or Arabic (anything else in the military).

You can take ROTC class just like taking any other class. Just sign up for it like it was a math or english class. Then if you really like it, you can try and get a scholarship. Once you get a scholarship/contract, that is when you are committed to doing time once you graduate and get commissioned. Call up a school you are interested in going to and talk with their ROTC people. It's a pretty good deal. But some people don't like ROTC at all, and just go enlist. Get all the facts before you do something you'll hate in a year.

talk to your marine recruiter about the officers program they have through college. it something like you go to college with a certified rotc program, the marines pay for most of your college, send you to boot camp and ocs during the summers, and your an officer when you graduate.

unless you decide not to contract... and depending on the service they just don't offer a contract to anybody. AFROTC won't offer a contract to anybody. you either have to be on scholarship or you have to be a field training graduate.

major doesn't really matter, all that matters is that you have a 4 year degree.

let me correct myself, you must be on scholarship by your junior year.

however, you still have to be accepted into the college program. Then your by your junior year you have to apply for the scholarship and if you are turned down you must be accepted into advance standing, if not you are kicked out.

advance standing is not given out much.

however, even while you are in the college program, you still have a "contract"

^^^.....epic fail @ ROTC knowledge^^^
first of all if you want to be in the marines then you have to realize that marines have no ROTC program, only the army and air force have them (at most schools, some have navy). You CAN apply for a scholarship in your first two years or even in high school (it is hard to get into, I know I had to do it). If and IF you get on contract within your first year you can quit anytime before the first day of your second year without any reprimand what so ever. Also if you go through field training the summer between your sophomore year and junior year AND PASS you AUTOMATICALLY are contracted and are on a scholarship. If anybody has any questions about AFROTC you can pm me or I can give you the phone number of Maj. Daryl Moon the AFROTC recruiting officer for my detachment or I can go even higher to my Lt. Col. CO

So you're in AFROTC, yet correcting somebody who works with the NROTC program? Hmm...

Marines DO have a program, it is called NROTC w/ Marine Corps option.

Don't take this as the honest truth, just what a navy officer told me about rotc -

The military doesn't really care what your 4 year degree is in, it could be in basket weaving it really doesn't matter. Its the fact that you have a 4 year degree that matters.

So don't major in something just because it will help you in the military unless you plan on going career, think about your civilian life as well.
