What does it take to become a pilot in the Navy
Hey guys, I just enlisted in the Navy, my MOS is AV (avionics) Aside from the 4 years of school and a bachelor's degree, what does it take to become a pilot. I heard you have to apply and they have to pick you, is it really really tough to be picked? I just hate the idea of studying to become a pilot with this as my goal and then not making it. Thoughts?

I think its something like 1% of people that want to fly ever get to fly.
You can apply for BOOST, which is how most of my friends have gone officer after enlisted.. or STA 21, seaman to admiral. Here's the link to the requirements:

IF you do get picked, you're committed for at least 8 years. just fyi in case you thought you could fly for a couple years and then get out.

From my NAVY pilot brother, from what I can remember:
Physics and math scores in college.
High ASVAB (?)
Flight school will decide where you go. Top of class will get jet fighters and then goes down the list. My bro was #2 I think. He's now an instructor pilot after doing a few tours.

My bro gets back Sunday. If you really want to know the deal shoot me a PM to remind me to ask him about his entrance into flight school. He's pretty good about that stuff.

I am applying for officer candidate school to be a pilot or a naval flight officer. You either have to go through the academy, or be selected for an officer selection program after you get a degree. I highly doubt you will be able to be a pilot as an enlisted.

i don't know how it is in the navy but in the air force like 95% of the pilots are either rotc or academy graduates. the other 5% come from ots. there are some guys in my det. that did some active duty and then go out, went into the reserves and started college, joined rotc and are doing it that way.

Not true at all, there are tons of Mustangs that go on to become airdales! Had a buddy that was originally avionics on f18 airframe, graduated college, he's now flying Hornets. My sisters fiancee pretty much did the same thing except he was powerplants on the 18, now hes an nfo.
