I've really considered it, because my Dad has been in for 25 years now.

When he told me he'd buy me a sword when I graduated the academy I strongly considered it. Not just for the sword, but he seemed like it would have made him proud.

Now I'm in Nursing school

If any of you have seen the movie "The Guardian" (Ashton Kutcher) is the training they show in that movie accurate to real training?

Thinking about going in after I graduate from the academy, but I'm not positive yet. If I do, it will be in the reserves and I will most likely attend the ROCI program.

The training is accurate. The extracurricular stuff was pretty much hollywood. the end of the movie where they were in Kodiak was on the dot.

Coast Guard

I am very interested in joining the Coast Guard and I was curious if anyone is in it or know anything about it? I talked to the recruiter (and I find him very biased towards the CG)

I chose this because I am very comfortable around water and it just seems something that I would like to do.

My friend is in and he said it's a blast. I want to do it because I want to save people. Being a rescue swimmer has got to be the most badass job. Ever since i started watching deadliest catch it's been my dreaam to get stationed in alaska.

If anyone has a question about the coast guard PM me. The coast guard will be a blast if you take the time to research all the jobs it has and find what suits you. You could be miserable scraping barnacles off of buoys on a river tender or literally have the best job in the world by pulling helpless victims out of the bering sea.

I go to Massachusetts Maritime Academy (obviously lol), but I qualify for MARGRAD (Maritime Academy Graduate Officer School) but I want to do ROCI (Reserve Officer Candidate Indoctrination) which is a 3-week reserve officer bootcamp program. Have you heard anything about it? I'm having a hard time finding information on it. Oh, my major directly coincides with many of the opportunities they have. I'm a MSEP major or Marine Safety Environmental Protection..thanks in advance.

One of the guys at my last unit just graduated there not too long ago. Its a cake walk for an officer program. I did hear a story of a guy integrating to active duty and going to flight school as a reserve officer. Heres a link I found http://www.cga.edu/ldc_display.aspx?id=650

I'm in the coast guard

Active Duty
Petty Officer 3rd class
Electronics Technician (ET3)

Edit: In the movie The Guardian, Ashton Kutcher was training to be an Aviation Survival Technician (AST). Everybody in the Coast Guard E-4 and above has their assigned "rate". Your rate is essentially your job in the Coast Guard, there's everything from Machinery Techicians (MK), all the way to Foodservice Specialists (FS). What you saw was the "A" school for AST.

If anyone has any questions about boot camp or just enlisting in general, just ask. I've only been in the Coast Guard for about a year, but I can probably answer most questions

I'm not sure, I'm still figuring out the logistics about the Coast Guard and whatnot, but I'm assuming from what you said that Reseve Officers don't sail? My major at college is Marine Safety Environmental Protection and from what I understand there is a division in the coast guard devoted to that. But it would be fun to sail, already been at sea for 3 months once, which is miniscule to what some people have been at sea for haha. But yea, I pretty much planned out my life last semester or atleast how I want it to go. I want to graduate here with my degree in MSEP, be an environmental officer on a cruise ship and then be in the reserves as an officer. Now that's bound to change especially if I make the leap to go into the CG but I'm just trying to get a feel for the whole ROCI program at the moment.

I'm going into boot as an E-3, so I guess once I get a rate I'll get to E-4? If I don't get a rate I'm stuck at E-3? I'm asking mostly because I'm a non-citizen but I plan to apply for my citizenship once I graduate from boot. I really want to become a GM seeing as I'm a good shot with rifles, but I need to be a citizen to get the rate.

gotcha.

and you can sail while being a reserve officer. its only a mandatory 2 weeks a year, but you have to do other stuff if you want retirement benefits (50pts a year and you only get 15 for the two weeks training).

i think i'm gonna sail msc and try to quickly advance my license.

what type of ship were you on?
