Child Cancer

Well, I'm 13 and my parents hate paintball..And they are worried about me getting Osteosarcoma, a cancer that occurs to kids between 12/13 to 18 when the bones are growing. When the bones are growing the cells are multiplying and getting shot just in the wrong angle could trigger it. And the bad thing is we also know two kids who have died from it. One dropped a carton of food on her food and the other got hit in the leg with a baseball. It sucks. I know its a long shot of getting shot in the leg and that angle but now my mom is making me wear shin pads every time I go, which now they are putting a hold on. And what got them worried was that last week I came home with two huge bruises on my left leg.

Advice?

lock yourself at home, get home-schooled, don't play sports... etc.

It sounds like you're the victim of unfortunate circumstances. After some quick googling I read that approximately 400 children are diagnosed with Osteosarcoma each year, so although the people you know were unlucky, it appears the chances of it happening to you are pretty low.

Also a large carton of food or a baseball has a lot more mass than a paintball. Even though a paintball is traveling much faster than a baseball, it still doesn't have enough energy to break a bone. It will bruise you and may sting for a few minutes, but as long as it doesn't hit an eye or ear (and remember you're should be wearing a mask) it won't cause any lasting damage.

Finally show them the facts, paintball has an injury rate of 0.2 injuries per 1000 hours of play, compare that to the "safer" sport of tennis which has a 2.3 injuries per 1000 hours of play.

Hope this helps, and keep us up to date.

Your best bet is to take them to a field and have other players explain how safe it is. Thats a bad one.

uh, getting cancer from getting shot? what?

****, seems like everything gives you cancer now. apparently my blacklight can give me cancer too.

sounds like your parents are over-protective, tell them to chill or smoke a joint or something.

i'de rather live a fulfilling, short life with cancer than a boring, paranoid, long life without cancer.

your parents are paranoid and are probably hypochondriacs.

do the research on other possible causes-seems like to me it would be very unusual to be linked to two cases of something so rare... in any case, don't let them make you paranoid about living. a bad day of paintball is better than a whole lot of good days locked up in the house watching the world go by

Trauma does not cause cancer. However people with this cancer will experience weaker bones, so it is more likely to get broken bones. The cancers specific cause is unknown, but cancer is mutated cells.

You can play paintball and will have no increased risk towards this disease. Actually playing and breaking a bone might help detect it.

Of course an illness that less than 1000 people have a year is statistically insignificant, as there are hundreds of millions of people in the United States.

If your parents are worried about you getting an extremely rare cancer from getting hit by a paintball I'd hate to see what else they won't let you do.

cmon now we all know they are giving him a story so they dont have to spend a bunch of money or watch you spend all your money on something that prob in their eyes wont lead to anything significant in helping you obtain a great education, job and paycheck... thats my guess or they do smoke too much and are already p noid! just kidding bro! your parents just love you and sometimes you have to listen. Just try to do some research or next time you are in the doctors office with them ask your doc. Put them on the spot. im sure he wont say it can cause cancer but he will say you can get hurt causing bones to not set right if you break a bone and what not but then just ask him if you can do the same thing by walking and tripping. they are being a little too cautious.

Fixed. How could you be so sure that if someone were to be receiving open-heart surgery, and someone shot a paintball at their heart?

a paintball has no where near enough mass to do damage to a bone
