Nightvision

A question I have had for a little while now is whether or not Gen 1 nightvision is worth the money? I dont have a huge budget for something that will be used 4-5 times per year.

When playing a 24 or 26 hour event there is night play. Its not that much fun to be out there and not be able to see anything. Thats why I was asking.

Depends on how serious you are. If you've got the money, go with gen II or better. If you don't have the money, then clearly night vision for 4-5 paintball games a year isn't something you should be worried about.
If you buy, just make sure it's got enough eye relief to see through your mask.

All 24 hours games that I have played do not allow nightVision. Check with your game host before investing.

Digital night vision is the way to go. Bushnell and yukon make great 5x42models under $400 and are comparable to gen2 with out the drawbacks. There is another one thats $1100 that is better than gen3 but I can't remember the name of it.

Then young padowan, you are using it wrong.
I have been Infantry for 18 years and I mount my NODs because it's a HUGE ADVANTAGE over those without them. Especially when using PEQ2s or PAQ-4s. That, however does not apply to paintball. So many paintballers use the 3 gazillion candle power spotlights that most GEN I NODs will shut off or have their image intensifier ruined. The GEN IIIs can take the brighter lights but still take a while to regain an image. But GEN IIIs are $$$$.

gen 1's are good for
1. spotting other NV
2. Looking for props
3. avoiding trees and stuff

as for actual contact and spotting people it's pretty much worthless unless you get gen 2.

on that digi cam night vision thing i havent tried but i may have to but like get a small digi cam and tone down the brightness (and have it in your mask over your non dominant eye) and turn it on maybe x2 zoom on negative so at night people should be bright while the ground is dark... idk if this would work or only with shadows.. just an idea i had.

Those models use infrared, infrared can be spoted easily by other paintballers... it is not spotted by animals but if you are using those models you are as good as standing out and saying here i am..

I have 1st gen. Its fairly cheap. I paid less then a hundred dollars for my set. 10-Shot said it best. It does okay for checking peremiters while doing base defense. Checking for props and so forth.

But be mindfull, if there 3rd gen people running around, you'll have to be carefull using your IR illuminator. And you have to run yours to see, they dont.

and here i was selling the digital stuff on the forums...

in night vision's defense, you don't play at night because you can't see at night. add night vision, and every thing's gravy.

As for the gen 3 people, they dropped 3-6 grand on their set ups, they deserve to see! but the good news is that you won't run into too many of those people.

The standard is 12mm, for a paintball mask, you need 45mm.

for the price gen1 isnt a bad investment. Its better the running around blind so to speak. I have a nice little gen 1 monocular, and dont need a IR to see anything. Doesnt have much of a range but it works just fine.

something along those lines is a good bang for your buck if you would rather have any sort of vision at night instead of running around in the dark.

yeah, any type of night vision is good. Here's the question you need to ask yourself if you are on the fence: where ELSE would you use it? Do you hike? Do you camp? do you like the idea of running around at night in a black leotard pretending you're Sam from Splinter Cell? if so, yeah, night vision is something you'd want anyways. If no, then i would suggest you not get it.

My logic is: the most expensive piece of equipment you own is the one you use the least.

I have this scope for night vision.

http://www.binocularsmart.com/nv/nig...es-np-75.shtml
As stated before, it's good for mostly stationary spotting or defense but very difficult to use while walking around. On a dark night with no moon, you'd need to use the IR illuminator which through the scope looks like your shining a green spotlight on everything. You'll see all the trees really well, but unless you're sitting still, keeping a player in your sights is pretty tough with a limited range of sight.
It was a good buy when I got it a few years ago, $250 then.
It's a fun toy, kinda heavy, has that wow factor, but borderline useful.
