Exclamation My '71 240z Build - 56k=no Updated 6-24-08

This thread here is to serve both as entertainment for all of you as well as a place for me to keep track of what I have done to her. I would also like to make a hard copy to send back to the guy that I got the car from so he can see what his project finished as. I got this car from a thread posted in the cars for sale section on www.hybridZ.org (amazing site!). One of wingnutthehut's friends Ed was moving from Oregon to Montana due to a new job. As much as he hated to say good bye to his baby, he came to the realization that he was going to have to part with his beloved '71 240z. Ed had had the car since '71. He traded his jeep to a guy 6 months after the z left the dealership when he was only 17 years old. He decided that he didn't want to sell the car, but he would rather give the whole project (parts cars and all) away to someone who would finish what he had started. He had started to tear into her an a lot of the work has already been done for me! Everything I need for the restoration is here between the original and 2 nearly complete parts cars. He rebuilt the engine, removed 95% of the interior, did some body work, checked the trans over, and much much more that I missed. It looks like my job will be putting everything back together and adding some paint. I am very thankful for what Ed has given me and I hope to be able to make him proud with the end result.

My plans for this car are to restore it to a respectable factory condition. I'm not aiming for restoration competition quality, but I do want to be able to show it off at meets and local car shows and take pride in what I'm showing.

If things go according to plan, I'll be able to use one of the parts cars to auto-x. Weld in a new rocker/chunk of quarter, replace the door, gut interior, slap my turbo onto my l28e from my ZX, megasquirt, and run. That's all for another thread though

On to the pictures! All of them can be found at my album and I am only posting a few in this thread. I hope you enjoy and feel free to message me with any comments, criticisms, or ideas!
Post up and let me know what you think

the little bad there is:

Very minor hole in the spare tire well:

New roof welded on, has a sunroof. It's going to be filled. Welds to smooth:

Rocker damage:

But I have this to weld in when I do the body work :

A little too much filler in the back for my tastes:

Here is a link to my album with all of the pics.

Again, I want to thank Ed and wingnutthehut for hooking me up with such an amazing opportunity!

I'm finally getting around to patching that sun roof. I cut the roof off of my red parts car and I have been trimming it to fit. It's close, but tomorrow will include the final shaping, welding, and smoothing.

Hate to break your heart Dake, but I'm thinking that I'm going to go with green 240 metalic. I'm still open to color suggestions so give me some more ideas. The engine bay has been sprayed in Ferrari yellow and I love yellow, but I think it's going to be too bright.

Here's a pic of what I'm thinking for the color

I hate the 280 bumpers and those wheels though.
Hood won't have the vents and I'm thinking chrome fender mirrors rather than the stock door ones.

Dake, I'll have to give you a ride and let you drive her if you're ever back in the tri cities when she's done
I'm shooting for the end of the summer.

Good choice on the fender mirrors and Paint. As much as I love orange on them, that green is a sick color.

That green is pretty smooth, man. Seconded on the mirrors. Are you going bumperless?

bumperless on my track car, but this one is getting the stock 240 bumpers. You can see them in one of the earlier pics.

here's what the look like on a car.
I'll even get a pic of an orange one

orange:

the original color, 920 gold:
