Recball referee

I'm joining my local fields team and one the requirements is reffing at the field. The field caters to primarily young kids first-times birthday parties etc. What things should I be aware of other than making sure their masks are on while on the field and barrel covers in the staging area?

Blind firing...

You may want to bring up the dangers of it, as often times it's the Ref that gets hit.

Make sure they are having fun and not getting shot up bad. Do your best to have the teams as balanced as possible.

When on the field during games, keep an eye on the players that have been eliminated. Players may start getting hot and uncomfortable and may instinctively try to take their mask off. Don't let this happen.

Carry things with you like microfiber towels to wipe goggles with, Allen keys to adjust velocity, and other small things that may come in handy.

1. Safety, of course.
2. Fun. With rec groups, you're in the business of selling them a day of fun. If it's not fun, they won't be back.
3. Turnaround/pace. This one might get overlooked, but you as the ref have to set the pace of the day. Plan to play two games on a field, then come back in for air, paint, water and snacks. While on the field, don't let it stagnate. Keep the players moving, keep the players shooting. If nobody's shooting, call out that everyone has to move to another bunker in 3, 2, 1, MOVE! If things have stagnated on the field, call a timer. You might not have to set a time limit at the beginning of the game, but you can always say "5 MINUTES! 5 MINUTES TO GAME OVER!" during the game, and then stick to that time. Just as important, once you come in from the field, get them air and paint, clean up, give them a couple minutes to rest up, then take them to the next field.
