An idea for offensive avatars

I've never understood why avatars dont get policed as much as other things on here. If my avatar has the word **** in it, there is a very good chance I'm going to get an infraction or warning. However, if I wanted to post a mostly nude chick in my avatar, nothing would happen. I see a lot of avatars that border softcore porn, on a daily basis.

The thing a lot of people dont think about is, a good majority of this site is under 18.

Yes, I know that avatars can be turned off, but thats really a pain in the ***, and not easy to recognize someone.

I have though of three ideas:

1. Every time you upload a new avatar, PBN asks you if its viewable for under 18. Then disabling avatars for those under 18

2. Not allowing them at all

3. Being able to turn off offensive avatars in your user CP (for those over 18 that dont want to see it). This would also require someone to say whether or not their avatar is offensive when uploading it.

I understand that this will probably never happen, but I figured it would never hurt to try to help PBN out

Just take the extra 3 seconds out of your day and shut them off.

Remember, PbN is a "PG-13" site.

Although its a good idea. #1 probably wouldn't work, because it relies on members honesty. While there are plenty of good/well meaning members, there are just as many who could care less about these "offensive" avatars.

I was thinking that failing to comply would result in a infraction

How would the mods possibly police this though, they have so much to do as is. This would be an extremely time consuming task.

They would probably need an extra mod or two. Regular users could also report them

True, although I'm not so sure the mods would appoint an extra mod or two just for avvy's. Due to the fact that only a select amount of people actually care about them.

Yeah thats why I'm hoping this suggestion will gain support by other members. If it doesnt, then it isn't as large of a problem as I originally thought

I think the system we have now is good enough.
If someone thinks an avy is inappropriate, they can report it. If the mod thinks it can pass as PG-13, it stays, if not, the member gets warned or banned.

Imho your idea is too complicated and involved for a site this size, but that's just one man's opinion.

honestly i stand behind this idea. It doesnt make sense if moderators ban or give infraction to those who uses profanity's language and not do anything in porn. From what i see parents and some people are more sensitive to porn than language because we hear or say or read it every day, but porn...... thats another story. I remember kids getting troubled about porn, meantime kids swearing and dont get scowled.

I'd say any type of nudity should be taken away. on top of that, i thought this IS a paintball nation not a porn nation. IF yall wanna see pornography, there is google. PBN please dont let this become even bigger porn site.

open ya eyes please

You forget, what you think is offensive to you, might not be to others. So if you think swear words are offensive, some people use them and don't find them offensive at all. It is all prospective, and you aren't looking at it in both eyes.

The ideas are good on paper but would be extremely difficult to enforce.

if it doesn't work out, and you see an image you don't like (presuming you use firefox with adblock plus, like everyone would in an ideal world), you can right-click and block that user's avvy.

its really a good based idea, but there are over 300,000 members on here lets say about 10% of them have pictures like that as their avatar, thats over 30,000 members. Would you like to be a mod and check 30,000 members profiles and decide on whether or not that person should a get an infraction/ban ?

Thanks for saying that you like my idea

The 300,000 members on this site arent all active. And to prevent a large swoop of having to clean out everyones avatar's, PM's could be sent to everyone by SYSTEM.

Maybe I'm not thinking correctly, but I think it could work

THAT^ will work. If members didnt do anything inorder to change their avatar, then it's an infraction/ban ....

I think it should be if found to be "borderline" in a mods eyes, or reported for being borderline and found to be offensive, it should be removed and the user should receive an infraction. if they put up another one like it... ban.

im not one way or the other on this matter, but my only thought is that users can change their avatar as much as theyd like, whenever they want. You see theres a loop hole, where users can keep switching avatars or even simply using .GIF avatars to escape getting caught(or just prevent/delay them from getting caught i guess)

Its not a bad idea but what some may call offensive others may see as normal, its too opinionated id think. but thats just my opinion i guess.

Interesting idea but, as has already been stated, "offensive" is an opinion. What one person finds offensive another person might not. I think of the ideas you've posted, having the ability within the CP to disable viewing all Avatars would be the most logical. That way, the people who enjoy the "questionable" avatars and those who don't find them offensive can continue to enjoy them. Those who find others avatars offensive and have regular avatars wouldn't have the option to turn off specific avatars, either view all or none.

I feel that ANY pic that originally contained nude images but has been blurred in such a way that the nudity is no longer visibly should not be allowed on here...I spoke with one mod about this via AIM and have also posted in the TTMA section

I hope they go through with such a new rule
