Plotting gear, extra water, 240/249 ammo, cleaning kit, extra set of boots, extra set of cammies, 3-5 skivy rolls, gortex, shelter half, entrenching tool, extra first aid kit, and of course, some random piece of gear you'll never use

It is and it isn't.

If you pack it right and you have a good pack, its not bad. You're gonna feel it, but you should be able to hike all day with a little conditioning.

lol, just figured out my tent for the first 8 days of the trip. Im sharing with 2 girls, both of which are vegetarians. im not sure whether sharing a tent with girls is good or bad. but eating no meat for 8 days is going to suck.

Found out my trip this summer is going to be in the siamese ponds area.

No meat Just shell out some dough and buy mountain house (with meat of course.) When they ask, tell them it's tofu.

Oh, and if you're still looking for a pack: Gregory After owning one, and using two others, it's all I'm going to buy.

Just got back from my first trip of the year, overall is was pretty good except for dinner. I don't know how it happened but someone thought that Ellios pizza would be a good backpacking dinner.

Oh, I go to Monroe Woodbury in Orange County. I know where yours is because I went to your school on a field trip once for a science research class that I'm in.

wow, last year our graduating class had about 1,800 I think

But back on topic, I'm either going on in the Pharoah Wilderness area or the Northville-Lake Placid trail

Mine : http://www.thenorthface.com/opencms/...=NA&model=AJ3X
A 30* bag that can be compressed to the size of a grapefruits and weighs less than a pound and a half. Funny enough, my bag says 900 fill on it (bought it a year ago,) and the site is advertising 850 fill. If you're wondering, I pack light.

It's the only way to go. It took me a while to get where I am now. Lots of saving, but it was worth it. I'm finally at the point where I don't have to buy anything for a while. Hooray.

The only problem with the loftier fills like that is that you need to wash them more often than the lesser lofts. The only thing keeping you warm is the loft, and it loses it quicker. Also, I would actually recommend a sleeping bag with a zipper. It's a pain sometimes when it's not cold enough to be in the bag and not warm enough to be out of it.

oh, that didnt have a zipper?
edit: nvm, it does. i see where you were going with it.

Im buying a bunch of gear this summer, so its going to be an expensive summer. im sick of mooching off my friends parents though, who have a ton of extra gear.

i might end up just buying one of their old bags and packs off them, but i kind of want to just get real nice stuff while i am at it.

Nope. It cut down on the weight considerably

If you're just starting out, don't worry about getting the best gear. You'll appreciate it more if you wait. Ha. But seriously, you don't need the best gear to have fun.

I gotcha. I would first invest in lots of polyester (It makes a HUGE difference in your comfort when you're wearing all polyester), then a backpack, then a bag, then a tent. But that's just my opinion. A good backpack with extra weight will be more comfortable than a cheap one with less weight. Your sleeping bag takes up the most room if it's a cheap one. Your tent doesn't have to be in your pack, so size isn't as big of an issue. Plus, you divy up the tent parts anyways. Oh, and don't waste your money on a therma rest. I've been using the same foam pad for years, it's lighter, and I've never had a problem.

i dont really need any of them, i can just take them from the school, but i want them.

pack and boots are the biggest investments im making the summer. then probably a sleeping bag. i figured thats at least 600 there, so i will probably call it quits at that point

I have quite a few polys and what not, but of course i will be getting a few more. i need more pants most importantly

Oh, oops. Forgot about the 'ol boots. Invest some time into finding the perfect pair, and test out different insoles. You'll be happy you did. Oh, and when I said polyester, I meant polyester and nylon (for shorts and pants.) The best thing I ever bought was polyester boxers. You already know my opinion on packs.

I spent good money and got perfect boots last winter, but they are just a lightweight boot for dayhikes. And i probably wont wear them much this winter, ill be breaking the new ones i get in. I need to find a place with a good selection of good boots, EMS has a mediocre selection
