Backpacking/Hiking/Mountaineering Thread

This thread is to discuss backpacking or related activities.

This summer I plan on spending a couple weeks on the AT,
couple different trips to Baxter State Park (Katadin),
Anyone know any other good places in New England?

Brilliant, I was just going to make a thread like this after I saw one from 2 years ago.

Unfortunatley i'm from WI so I don't really know anything in New England.

But I would like to share some pictures of my backpacking trip in Germany, all from Bravaria

just went up to the treeline

(we didn't attempt those ones)

The time stamp is a year off, it was from 2008

It's about time someone made this thread.

I started backpacking when I joined Boy Scouts, a few years later I received my Eagle, and I still continue to backpack in between climbing. The best trip I've been on was a 100+ miler at Philmont (NM.) The next trip a friend and I have planned has us starting in Northern California and hiking to Alaska.... when ever I find the time during college.

im a wilderness education minor in upstate NY, i dont leave the adirondacks much though. There is some good bushwacking in there, and some good peaks if you are more into that.

I'm going backpacking in the Adirondacks and in Denali this year.

This week I'll probably be going local in the Catskills

I have a friend who works at Philmont in New Mexico, great place.

I'm going on a week trip to Colorado at the end of summer. I've never done any extreme trips, although i'd like to. I've peaked out a couple mountains in Colorado and New Mexico, because living in Oklahoma that's the closest there is. So I don't get a lot of chances.

My friends and I are already thinking about tackling part of the Appalachian Trail when we graduate college. We'd like to try the Ouchita Trail too.

I've never climbed any but originally we were going to climb Big Slide, Lower Wolfjaw, Upper Wolfjaw, Armstrong, Gothics, Haystack, Basin, Saddleback, Marcy , Skylight, and Colden but we decided not to so we wouldn't tire ourselves out(we're going to Alaska two weeks later)

I'll probably do Mt. Marcy either this year or next year

you were planning to do all those in a week? that would be pretty impressive.

There are quite a few easy peaks to start with. Id consider starting with Cascade and porter, they can be done together, and its a relativly easy and short trip. Although if you are hiking in alaska this summer and/or were planning that trip, I assume you are relativly experienced so you an pretty much skip that advice

Northville-Placid Trail maybe?

I'm in the Marines. Frankly, I've never hiked outside of the Marine Corps.

My friends want to go hiking here in Hawaii.

What exactly do you wear to a civilian hike?

depends on the environment. here in the adirodacks, i wear a poly(underarmor) and nylon pants or something similar. lightweight, repels water, wicks away sweat, and protects you somewhat from the annoying ****ing bugs everywhere

Ah. Yea, I was wondering. Especially about the pants.

Now, someone tell me: Whats it like to hump without a 70+lb pack, flak, and rifle?
