When AKA started producing their Black Widow 'Cockers they were right feed. When people started requesting vert feed they had a very hard time getting the bodies from WGP. So, AKA made their own. Out of the entire 'Cocker this is the only item Bud Orr did not patent or get a copyright for. It was just a gentleman's agreement, that nobody would make them. When WGP took AKA to court the judge dismissed the case for some reason that I am having trouble remembering ( I want to say the lack of a real case ). So, with the case dropped AKA is free to make the bodies. Thus, the VLM and Merlin were born. And most of them lived happily ever after.

if i remember right wgp didn't bother to patent anything hence everyone and their brother makes similar parts for the same gun. & that was exactly the reason the case was dropped.

I'll try to quote Bud Orr as accurately as I can remember here... "when we first entered the paintball business the sport was extremely unstable and it didnt look like it would be around more than a few years" Translation: we wanted to make a quick buck and not was money on patents.

That is pretty stupid. The AKA merlin bodies are better than the WGP ones. Maybe WGP didnt want to admit to the public their own guns main part(the body!) wasnt as good as an aftermarket one.

There are several companies that make better bodies than WGP. Better aluminum, better machining, better standards and they will either make you a completely custom gun or sell you a raw body.
As far as I know there still isnt a patent on cockers.
