Couple questions. I just got a Beltronics 965 for free.
I've had it for a couple days now and passed 2 cops in common areas where they like to sit and wait for speeders. I've gotten no warnings from detector. I've received a couple false alarms(X band and a k band) Its set to autosense and POP is turned on.
I have it mounted about 3 to 4 inches off the dash, high enough where it clears the wipers and as I clear path across the hood.
Should it be mounted higher?
Is this a good detector, or should I sell it, and use what I get to get something better?

When I had my Passport 8500 X50, it was more of a false sense of security than anything else. I thought I could speed more and all this stuff, but no. I got my only tickets when I had the Fuzz Buster.
With today's pop radar/laser, radar detectors are less effective.
Don't waste your money, just drive smarter.
My $.02.

How new is the chart? I live in Illinois and have been told they are legal, had one in my car for the last 6 years or so...
I just have a cheapo, but it does the job.

a radar detector isn't some magical gizmo that allows you to speed as fast as you want and drive recklessly while being invisible to police.
it's just another tool to help you avoid speeding tickets. If you get a radar detector and start driving faster with more confidence (without other traffic, or a rabbit to follow) all that will happen is you';ll know you got a ticket before you see the cop
Honestly, the number 1 most effective tool to avoid speeding tickets is other traffic, and knowing the law. a radar detector is a far second.

I have a Passport Escort 8500. It works very well. Just as well as the V1 I owned not too long ago. I just use the Passport now because I like the way it looks better.
My advice to anyone getting a Radar Detector is that if you think you are set just because you have a RD, you will be doing a huge disservice to yourself and in the end, do more harm than good. I used to speed a bit prior to having a radar detector and since getting one, it serves as a constant reminder on my windshield that there ARE police and speeding laws so I actually speed significantly less now that I have a RD.

My dad has been using radar detectors since I was born (Chicago suburbs) and he has never gotten in trouble with cops for it. He has a Passport model, I'm not sure which, but I know that it has never let him down.
When I'm driving to paintball (70 mile drive each direction) and don't have it with me I usually find someone on the highway with a V1/Passport and just follow them, always works fine. Plus they get nailed by the state troopers because they're in front. Anyone going over 80 is going fast enough for me to follow because I don't get that annoyed feeling of driving slower than I can on the highway from them.
I don't know much about the different models and my only experience is with a Passport model so I'm not really in a place to say which is better, but what I can honestly say is that I drive through a whole lot of speedtraps monitored by police with the latest and greatest, and have never been pulled over with the Passport.

Quick question. Radar detectors are great and all, but what about a pedestrian or passer-by who hates speeders grabs your plate # and calls the cops? What could/can they do, if there were no cops around?
The reason I ask is because I've been stared at by people a few times and it makes me a bit nervous, including last night. I was almost certain cops were going to show up at my door..
