Probably already been discussed but I couldn't find anything on it.

All you V1 users, what's your favorite setting? What conditions do you normally drive in??

if you have the manual, i would suggest using the setting where it wont alert you if a K signal is under 4 bars in strength, will probably save you 90% of all falses and still give you long enough to slow down. There is also a setting to increase the warning if you get Ka band. last i turned off POP and X band

Was thinkin about getting a Whistler XTR 550 for now as a budget detector. Heard a lot of good things about it for the price, and I think it's all I would need for now. I don't speed too much and it would just be an added source of security. Opinions? Even though you're all probably going to say it sucks, save up, etc.

Why not? I mean the Whistler XTR 550 has all the features I'm looking for; voice alerts, 360* protection, X/K/Ka detection, etc. I'm not looking to go 100+ mph through my town and expect to slow down in time when the radar detector goes off. I'm just looking for something to give me a heads up to remind me to check my speed when I'm in range of being checked by cops or a speed trap. I'm just wanting something to offer a little extra protection than just using my eyes to see if there are any cops visible.

I'll just give you an example, A 400$ detector might give you like 30 seconds before a cop, but a cheap one might give you less than 5, they also might not detect cops over a hill or around a curve. I wouldnt worry about the money because It will more than likely pay for itself over its lifetime. I'm just saying one time you might end up getting a ticket when a better detector could have saved you

That makes sense, but here in Florida there are no hills whatsoever that I need to be worried about. I've been reading reviews on the XTR 550 and people say that it detects the signals around curves and turns and gives you atleast a 3/4 mile warning if not more on average. Everyone I've asked said the Whistlers beat any Cobras out there, and I think I'll get the 550 for now until (and if) I decide I need something better.

That's definitely good to hear when I'm pretty much set on getting one. How do you like it? How long have you had it?

I like it. Laser detection is virtually useless, but you'd be better off picking up some sort of laser deflection (such as VEIL) anyway.
I've had it for over a year and a half now, still a trooper.
For best results, mount it high.
I can safely get from 20 over down to speed on the highway with the detection range of it, but that's nothing special for a mid-range detector.

Thanks for the input. That's exactly what I was looking for

Well I can get a brand new XTR550 shipped for $52.50, so that would mean $110 for your 8500 x50?

Your in Cen FL where I am. They use a lot of KA band and Laser here.
That Whistler will not be much of an improvement over a GOOD detector.
Also with the use of POP here that whistler won't stand a chance. I would rather not have anything than any detector sub<$200 because it will give you just as much confidence to get a higher ticket.

Don't be cheap, there is a reason why the V1 and the other high end Detector are the best and correlate with their prices.
A cobra has MORE features most times than a V1.. I mean Im sure cobras have GPS/Clock/compass/voice/reads your texts.... but thats all selling points for them. You want a detector not a ****en toy on your windshield.

Goodluck with your Whistler, I will wait for your "I should of gotten a xxxx"

ps. If you never owned More than one Detector you wont know how much better a higher end one is.. since the whistler is all you have known..

Laser detection is pretty much useless with any detector because it doesn't scatter like radar does(so yes get some veil if they use laser in your area), and mounting the detector high will get better radar detection, but worse laser, so it's up to you.
As for the guy buying the 50$ detector, my personal advice is spend 200 and get a V1 or equivalent. If it saves you one ticket in its life it has paid for itself. It will also keep you a little more relaxed and feeling better about the protection it gives you

Back from Black Friday shopping...kinda dissapointed. Lowest price I found on an XTR-550 was $69.99 after the discount, so I went ahead and ordered one brand new online with a one year warranty for $56
