I drive a one hour commute each way to school about three to five times a week.(do it at least 5 times a week, but I don't always drive) Staying around 80-87 in 70 for the majority of the trip. Since I have so much experience with this particular stretch of freeway I have all the speed traps memorized, as well as the majority of the undercover vehicles known. For the most part I approach all somewhat newer looking cars with caution and only pass them once I can knock off the risk of them being a cop (bumper sticker, dangling thing from the mirror, etc) So I'm a pretty awake and alert driver when it comes to the cops and have yet to have been pulled over in 2 years of the drive. So from someone who has experienced both, would I benefit from a radar detector for extra security? Or just stick with my current routine?

well eventually i am sure you will mess up and miss a vehicle. and usually if you can see them then they already have your speed. i drive to and from my girlfriends house quite a bit on a cop infested road. i got really used to checking on cops but when i got my radar detector there were many i missed. i mean, even if a detector saves you just one ticket it has paid for itself

Hrmm good point, thanks

edit: are cops more likely to ticket you if you have a radar detector? My old carpool got pulled over once for like 80 in a 70, and the cop let them go because we were just on our way to school and felt bad for our long commute...so how about loosing sympathy points? haha

yeah they probably would be more likely to ticket you if they pull you over for something and you leave it up. the thing is though if you know that there is one around you can slow down and not give him a reason to think twice about it. and when i get pulled over i just pull mine down(pulled over for window tint twice) but never pulled over for speeding since i bought it

i know many officers, none will be less sympathetic because you have a radar detector. its perfectly legal and if your not some smart *** kid, its no big deal. alot of people think that because you have a detector, your a speeder. most officers understand that its a legal tool to protecting and alerting yourself to police presence.

yeah its only illegal in DC and Virignia i think. In MN its illegal to have anything mounted on your windshield so they could technically ticket you for it. MN cops are douchebags for the most part and i dont risk having it put up.

you could always get a rearview mirror mount for it. they're fairly common.

Picked up a Passport 8500 X50 from my buddy at work for 50. People needing money badly ftw. he went from 160 to 50 haha. Anyways I'm about to get the smart cord and hardwire it. Possibly mount it on top of my rear view mirror. Anyone have experience with it?

other than firmware, the only real upgrade would be a Valentine One, and that comes with what many people find to be annoyingly oversensitiveness.

But it's your call.

I had a V1 last year and didn't really like it that much. Way too many false alarms i stopped paying attention to it. Sold it made a small profit. I think i'm just gonna stay with the X50 for a while and see how I like it.

^ im pretty sure it does include GPS. here in california i think the only place you can have something on your windshield is the far left or right corner.

im gonna hardwire my detector soon so im not too worried.
