Though I must say Obama has specifically referred to John McCain as a "true American hero". John Kerry's military record was attacked by Swift Boat Veterans for truth and made out to be some kind of a traitor.

That is fairly vague language, which can easily be interpreted as the Republicans at won't point were not attacking Democrats and now they are. If you don't want people to "put words in your mouth". Try being more precise in your language instead of using words that imply rather than explicitly state.
