If you dry fire without your hand, a squeegee or something else to provide back pressure, the force of the air can (though not everyone has experienced this) shoot the pillow off of the brass piece that screws into the bolt. It would then be shot out of the barrel.
It is advised that you just not dry fire without something to provide back pressure. Pillows are a cheap replacement, though, so you might as well buy an extra just in case. Many people have also been shooting just fine without a pillow in the bolt, though it is not ideal.
