Is America ready?

I looked through the first three pages to see if this topic had been done before.

Do you believe America is ready for a black president?

In my opinion, we aren't. I honestly believe it would cause even more racial tension since the race card is being played a lot in today's society. In a sense, it's a double bladed knife. Racism is always going to be present in this country, from every race.

Look at how people jumped on the bash Bush bandwagon. Imagine what would happen to Obama if he was elected and turned out to be a flop. I'm not saying he'd assassinated, but I believe the division in our country and distaste for our president would be 5x worse than it is now.

I do not want this to turn into a debate over Obama. I dislike democrats greatly, but I am neutral on Obama. This thread will have nothing to do with what Obama stands for, other than the fact that he is black.

I'd get elected on Friday, assasinated on Saturday,
and buried on Sunday.

By the looks of how receptive the American public is to Obama, I would say we are 112% ready for a black president. I think you are just trying to convince yourself of the inevitable.

If Obama wins this country as whole will be ready, however there will always be a section of individuals who aren't.

If America is not ready for a black president, then Mccain will get elected. I don't see how it's any more complicated than that.

Exactly. There is always going to be the sect of people that aren't going to be for whoever is president.

Like I said, I'm neutral on Obama.

I'm just basing this on the blatant ignorant racism I see and hear everyday by the people around me.

A lot of you missed the point. Yes, A LOT of people are backing him now, but what if he's elected and flops as a president?

If he flops as president, then people will not like him as a person. It will have nothing to do with his race, but with his incompetencies. (which I doubt would ever happen in the first place)

Then he will flop and people who choose to will point to how a black man failed, does that mean America is not ready for a black president, no. It means that a section of individuals weren't.

That's how things SHOULD work. I completely agree, but in a country where "hate crimes" exist, it doesn't work that way. It doesn't matter if it's the person itself, it ultimately boils out to a race issue in this country.

To elaborate on that, if a white man kills a black man because the black man did him wrong, it's a hate crime. What you said is true, but like I said, it doesn't work like that here.

I know for a fact that if he is elected every time he is criticized people would say that the criticism is only because he is black.

And what if he's elected and is a great president?

You can't really say that people won't be ready to have a black man as president based on "What Ifs?" and theoretical questions.

The truth is that every president that is elected, even the worse, will still have a large percentage on U.S. Americans backing their politics and no president's cabinet and time in office will be considered a flop.

For example, look at president Bush. The majority of U.S. Americans disagree with his politics and despise his cabinet. However, he still has a large percentage of U.S. Americans backing him and as long as he has that population backing him and his practices, his presidency will not be considered a flop.

I honestly don't think as many people would pull the race card as the cause of his failure. I mean I'm sure people are going to, but not as many as you think. Who knows?

So America wasn't ready for an Irish Catholic when Kennedy was shot?

There will always be crazy people out there, but the country cannot and will not be dominated by them.

If Obama is elected then America has stated that it is ready with the ballot. How is this so hard to grasp?....

Finally someone sees my point.

Look at what happened in Jena this year and tell me this country, not just the whites, are ready.
