If you could create the perfect MMO
I’m doing a project for my marketing class where I have to take an existing product or service and come up with a competing alternative.
I decided to do WoW and create a new MMO to compete with it.
I ask if you will, list what you like about wow, what you don’t like, what you expect out of an mmo, (price, content, etc) and any thing else that would entice you to play the game
Go into as much or as little info as you’d like, I’m just doing a preliminary analysis to see if I can collect enough data to justify a project
if you don't play MMO's, I'd like to know why, even if its something simple like they never seemed like they'd hold your interest
Thanks

IMO WoW is:
Good:
Very easy to get into
Easy to play (You don't need to press Ctrl + Alt + Insert + A to run forward, uses simple FPS controls)
Made in a way that makes sense and parallels real world (Auction Houses allow players to sell items they don't want similar to eBay)
Ever-changing economy like real world
Constantly patched for attempt at balance (Although it never is but I don't think WoW could ever be perfectly balanced)
Bad:
I once ran an instance with a 10 year old healing
People are never happy and constantly complain ("OMGZ j00 kill meh, u need nerf!!!")
People can spam things in General or Trade chat and reporting them does nothing
If you accidentally say any 4 letter word in General or Trade you will instantly have 5+ whispers from Game Masters telling you to not use that language and/or temp ban

Have a tech team that actually gives support.
Have game masters that don't just copy/paste solutions.
Pancakes
Good luck

Less of the "level up" deal, more action/playing. IE make it not boring..

That too. Take away monthly fees. Most games get along fine without them, why can't MMOs?

Honestly, I would have a large amount of developer hands-on to keep things moving, and keep them changing. They could run a continual story in a continual war, and keep throwing stuff in like new PvP battles, new and changing frontlines (territory lost and occupied by warring nations). That way, when something doesn't work, they can have a team to come in and fix it in a way to continue a story while making needed changes to the universe the game is set in.
Players would choose which native country they want, and then whenever there are battles, they could choose to enlist in them, or continue on just doing their regular quests. Story would be determined through this battles.
I think that would make it feel more like a war mmo, where main characters in the story can be assassinated, can change sides, start rebellions. I play games for story, and mmos just seem to tell a very linear, very boring story that gets really lost amidst the massive amounts of everything to do. I think something like this would be a step in the right direction to change that.
For me, it would make it worth the money for me to spend a monthly fee just to play.
Just my 2 cents.

for pvp:
-have pvp zones in the real word, non-instanced
-keep an arena system and the instanced system, but make both of them be registered teams (like arena)
-you steal currency when you kill someone (incentive for world pvp) and other incentives to keep world pvp alive
-prevent cookie cutter setups (there will always be that but at least make it so you can pair with more than1 class for 2's, ect)
-World pvp zones where if you capture zones/forts/ect you get currency/some other incentive
-have actual faction fights, in wow, it's more server pride (tich ftw) than it is about horde v ally
pve
-have more random encounters, non of this scripted bs or have multiple ways to kill a boss
-have more than 3 rolls
-have world events that actually have an impact on game
****s n giggles:
-have random mini-games for players to play while looking for groups
just a quick list i made at work

ahh because most games dont have constant evolving content and require constant patches and maintenance like MMORPG's?
Personally i would never play a mmorpg that you didnt have to pay for because i know that the service and quality just wouldnt be there.
imo people who have only played WoW have no business asking what the perfect MMORPG would be, imo Everquest + Ruins of Kunark expansion was the best MMORPG I ever played, the variety and innovation, the fun, people actually cared for one another and a guild wasnt just somthing that anyone could have, guild participated in events, world events happened frequently even for lower lvls
as well, with Kunark expansion [before all the others came out] there were only a few major areas to hunt for noobs which were the best, which IMO was awsome hunting on like the beach at Oasis with 80 other people all grouped up and hunting
then of course EQ had to keep competeing with other games and let out more and more expansions then it became diluted and no more fun.
Imo keys to having the best mmorpg:
- No instances
-guilds are able to dominate cities and land masses
-fighting is still turn based and energy based ie. WoW/EG
- Mobs drop items that they are wearing, ie. you see an orc wearing a dope shirt, he will drop that shirt for you to wear
- things shouldnt be nerfed once everything is available, only adapted to situations
- PVP is more prominent even on non-pvp servers
- world events which develop the story line are more available to lower lvls, big things happen more frequently which involve everyone
- NPC led raids

No grinding. Basically, almost completely eliminate the raid/instance PvE aspect of it, because when that happens, the losers with 5 hours of time to spend on the game every day get the best gear, then they become the best PvPers and it's no longer a level playing field.
Make it so those who do spend more time than others playing will benefit from it, but those who don't have too much time to spend can still make some leeway into the deeper elements of the game, unlike in WoW where a solid 3-7 hours will be needed for a raid.
Pretty much what the guy above me said.

I've never had a game meet what I consider perfect customizing options. So make those pretty deep. Think of Forza 2 car painting/vinyl ability for face/body/clothes/etc. Then I might be happy. I'd enjoy taking like 2 hours making, say, an outfit for my guy.

For price, I'd say a fee for the software, but no monthly fees.
I'd be interested in a mafia mmo. I've looked, but the only ones I can find have been text-based.
Another good feature would be customizeable player looks and clothing.

imagine like running up into single and groups of players in combat, then moving to a third person view and the fighting is very skill based with the keyboard

Look at the game darkfall, pretty much that with better grapics. You can build cities there are NO levels there are NO classes, every spell and weapon is accessible to everyone, It is all skill based, pvp ANYWHERE, build a city and siege other cities, mounted combat, naval combat, it looks awesome.
