Private Messages.

I have capped the private message limit to 200 pms in place of the previous limit of 500. According to the stats, there are 211 thousand pms that users have in their "Sent Items" folder and a total of almost 347 thousand pms in the pbnation database.

To raise a general awareness for writing pms; you may notice several checkboxes in the Options section of the screen, located just below the Message box while composing a new private message or replying to one.

There are two options that are selected by default that you might find you use but don't need to: "Save a copy:" and "Request Read Receipt:" Both are illustrated in the image below:

If "Save a copy" is checked then a copy of the message will be placed in your "Sent Items" folder.

If "Request Read Receipt" is checked then there will be a listing of the pm in your "Message Tracking" area. You can go to your Message Tracking and see if the recipient has read your pm yet or not.

Both the "Sent Items" folder and "Message Tracking" can be found by dropping down the "Jump to folder:" menu, located in the Private Message section of your User CP (profile).

The reason for this announcement is to help reduce the number of pms in the database that aren't needed and to help users better understand how the forum works. There are a large number of users that have well over 200 pms and this is just a friendly reminder on ways to cut down on the amount.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask here.

Well why dont you change it so that the initial option for saving a PM is *not* checked initially.

Dont that make more sense then makeing everyone remeber to not un-check it?

sellout: brilliant idea, that's magically going to make the 330,000 pm's that are already in the database go away too, right?

No, but wouldn't it cut down on the fact that it's not always checked, so someone that simply wants to send a short PM, can do so, and not have 1-2 more "bits" of PM left in their box?

I think it was a good suggestion.. Althought I read your post with a dripping amount of sarcasm, that I might not have thought was needed.

Im glad someone has a brain o)

Nope, but it will keep it from happening again now wont it? Or did you forget to think about that part?

Next time have a *whole* thought, and then post.

I had the whole thought, but I guess you are still subscribing to the idea that the site is always going to continue being the exact same way it is now, and missing the point that by reducing the amount of stuff in the database now, *might* just be to pave the way for bigger and better things in the "near" future..

Isn't what i just suggested a way to "better things in the "near" future.. "

Its a simple suggestion so this problem does not happen again. I guess you didnt understand it as that though, maybe i should have explained it a bit more *shrug*
