Philosophy is not something you can just skim and understand, I sometimes spend 30 minutes on a passage in order to extract the meaning. I really enjoy philosophy though and recommend anyone interested in politics to take a few courses as some of the best political thinkers were philosophers.

I'm not really liking medieval philosophy, because it deals too much with proving God and the translations I have are just blahh.

It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized
discipline. But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion
on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance.

I have yet to start in any philosphy classes but I sure enjoyed my Sociology sequence. The teacher was a little crazy about things but it was a very interesting set of classes. As far as books, seeing I had to take a break from college the last book I read was The McDondalization of Society, HH-65 flight manual (really not that interesting), and as far as texts it would be Medicolegal Investigation of Death.

Nothing tops 1984 yet!
I disagree,

Hemogony or Survival > 1984 but they are a close 1-2

Honestly,

smoke a little weed before class.

depending on the day, the Professor might blow all your pre-concieved notions out your butthole. just don't do it during ethics.

However, smoking while reading John Scotus Eriugena (as I am doing now) is not a good idea.

I have taken 45 credit hours in the past 2 quarters at Ohio State...quit a workload. Never did take a philosophy course..probably never will. It seems too "out-there" for me.

Some recent books I have been reading include Upton Sinclair's, "The Jungle," which was required for my American history class. I am not sure if anybody has read it, but it is incredibly depressing and shows America in a very bleak light. I'm going to do some secondary research on the book because I'm curious to see how much of the book is factual how much borders on hyperbole.

I also have been reading "A foreign policy of freedom," by Ron Paul, and when I want to laugh "I am America, and So Can You!" By Stephen Colbert. Both are great in their own way

Your missing out, it asks very essential questions that are related to both our abstract or metaphysical existence, but our moral and political existence as well and that is not out there, but the here and now.

I had a professor who made us read 25000 words to find 25 words every week as a quiz. The difference in the word was spelling, but that was 15% of our grade. I argued continuously with the guy, and yeah, he was an idiot. I have one idiot professor each semester which pisses me off because I have to deal with it and.. pay for it.

I hate professors who tell you to read the book but don't ever test you on anything from the book. They test you on what they lecture, their own ideas.

I was in a Consitutional Law class and the guy said if you take good notes you will pass every test because you can take them with you to the testing center. Man I wrote down everything that came out of his mouth. My stupid self opened the wrapping on the book but never once opened it. I could have gotten my 80 bucks back!

Yeah I know what it's about, I've heard stories. My twin brother worked with a guy once who fully believed everything he heard in philosophy. He thought only what you see in front of you is real, and everything behind you was nothing.

I wanted to ask him how he explains mirrors...but I never got the chance...
