Lateralus tied up with the movie Pi?

If you have ever seen the surreal pseudo thriller Pi, you will know that it revolves around the theory that all life exists in Spirals. The story is a bit hokey, but fascinating and at least semi-plausible. I suggest you check it out if you haven't seen it yet.

Anyway, the theory very closely relates the song Lateralus, by Tool. The song almost 'spirals' up to a audible climax, then spirals back out. My analysis, as well as many others, is that the song talks about how from birth, life is a spiral. If you want an indepth explination, IM me. Anyway, the movie explains how life is made up of spirals, from the galaxy that we live in, to our personal lives.

My question is, do you think this movie is based off of the song? I think so, because the ideas are almost identical, and rather interesting. They almost seem to use the same lyrics at points.

If you haven't seen the movie, you can post about Lateralus .

Um, most songs "Spiral up to a climax" and then drop back down, that's basic song structure.

first of all i love both pi and tool.

reading the lyrics, as well as listening to the riffs, basslines, and drumbeats to lateralus i understand where you could make the assumption. but honestly i think that your putting too much of a connection with the spacey story line to the movie, and tool's artistic lyrics. most of the lyrics that maynard writes are based on life expireices formated in a strange way. just like radiohead.

I agree Hearshot, but it would have been a cool find . Ya, I agree about his lyrics, and just wanted to bring the fact to attention. Glad you know what I am talking about.

Hmm, I never really thought about it before, but I guess there could be some connection.

No, not really.

Seeing as how Pi was released in 1998, and the Lateralus album was released in 2001, it is more likely that the song is based off of the movie.

Wow, thought it was released later than that (Pi). Thanks for the correction.

well, then there could be a possibility that the song still does have a connection the movie. that would give the band a three year period to produce lateralus. frankly i doubt there is any real connection between the movie and the song, but its an ill idea.

Strangely enough, Lateralus can also be played to The Wizard of Oz.

When do you start it (lateralus)? The same point you start Darkside of the Moon?

It's either 30 or 60 seconds earlier, or 30 or 60 seconds later. I don't remember which.

Schism should start playing at the same point in the movie where Money would start playing.
