360 RROD? and more questions about fans and cooling
okay ive had 2 of these already, ive wanted to mod my 360 many times, even if only to open it up and install better or mroe fans to cool it, but havent due to not wanting a paperweight RROD 360 without warranty
did we ever figure out why it happens? overheating? i noticed they happened in long gaming sessions, like exceeding 30 hours of constant gameplay. coding error?
if its overheating then taht i can fix, go in and put some AS5 or their new MX2 stuff on the heatsink, wire in 2 new rear fans that move more air, new fan for the HS, possibly a side intake....
also, anyone have stats on the fans inside the 360?

It's not just cooling. Some have said it was a flexing problem of the mobo. The little X-clips that hold the processor and GPU heatsinks applies pressure and heat to the mobo, causing it to flex. It doesn't know what to do, so it throws out 2 or 3 red lights. But there are also many other things that could cause it.

damn, hmmmm with enough modding the flexing could be fixed, the unknowns however im not so sure about
i also think that the heat is letting the board flex more due to being slightly more tangible when hot, which is why it is happening often when gamers are playing for longsessions? either way M$ really needs to fix it

Heat plays a role but it also can happen randomly on startup or shutdown with a quick system failure. I keep mine on a laptop cooler just in case and it was cheap usb powered protection.

inter cooler sucks. Pelican is ok. I am going to get a few fans to drain, and only drain. if 120 fits ill use 1.

get a broken intercooler. you can gut it for a connector that goes between the 360s power block's cable that plugs into the 360 and the 360 but has a 12v line coming out of it. i use that and 2 72mms willl fit perfectly i think. you can use 120 but most of the air youll be drawing is fromt eh sides

Just get a 1000mA 12v power brick from Radio Shack (or steal one from an old electronic, haha). Each 120mm fan requires 200mA at least. Just wire them in paralel and you're golden. Throw a switch on the positive before the fans, and call it a day.
Tis how my laptop cooler runs

As far as the boards flexing, there's a simple fix. Instead of using a solid Xclip, you use a few washers on each place the screws go. That's all the Xclip does is hold up stuff, so those work fine. Or you can get a new one from Radioshack that will work fine. Google "360 X fix"
