merlin project couple questions

ok my project is going great so far. I used a pair of halo eye's for my w/blade
and would like to mount them but my merlin has the spyder style detent and the detent cover is going to get in the way of one of the eye's. i was thinking about doing a ball detent and moving it forward just enough to fit the eye on the left side.so i need to find a super small ball detent so it wont take up much space.any suggestions would be great. oh one more thing anyone think i could fill the hole's in the body with a couple spot weld's for aluminum?

dont weld aluminum. from experience, it doesnt work out. i had to do a physics project recently and it involved welding a steel pipe to an aluminum soup can. the soup can became lobsided (ironic thing is, i was trying to make it roll the fastest). you can guess how that turned out lol. anyways, dont weld aluminum.

EDIT: unless your a pro welder or work on cars. if you are great with welding and stuff you might have a chance at it, but if you just found your dad's old stuff in the garage and thought it would be fun to play with, DONT!

Ok yes you can weld aluminum...find a qaulified welder....DO NOT do it yourself..aluminum is tricky to weld....we do it at the shop when there is a huge problem with a gunl...the anno will be a little off, but thats it.....when blended right you can't tell....I am working on a merlin right now....it is halfblocked, ultralite framed, with pred board, mq2 all the good pnues etc...i think we are making eye covers for it tomorrow at the shop....we will probably model them after race eye covers

What you could do is make special eye covers and use the small plastic nubs like on a viking, excalibur, or cyborg.

Welding aluminum is only difficult if you don't have the right welder. My dad works at a machine shop, we had to have my tree stand re welded cause the weld failed. It's aluminum. They used, and I know I probably will spell this wrong, but I think its a helioarc welder? Whatever it is, it's used for aluminum.

Welll... I wanted to wait until my gun was all put together to post any pictures of it (since it came back from anno)... but I'll let this one slide to help out a fellow merlin fan. This was my solution, basically I cut off the back of the detent cover,(the second screw hole really isn't needed) rounded it off... and then just notched out the eblade cover a bit to fit together and cover the eye. I also milled mine out to take a spring loaded viking detent... but you don't need to do that.

The beauty finally got annoed. I can't wait to see her put together. By the way, good luck with the Merlin. I'm glad to see another Merlin guy out there.

Does anybody know of any metal eye covers that actually look decent and work? I was thinking of trying to do something similar to the Ego eye covers for the Merlin project I'm working on...combine the detents with the eyes on both sides and have something that looks nice to cover it other then the cheap plastic Eblade eye covers. I remember seeing I believe ANS eye covers but don't know if they're a combination detent/eye cover or if you can even purchase them separately.

EDIT: I guess it would pay to look at other posts...just saw TX has what I'm looking for.

I wouldent mind haveing a nise set of eye/detent cover's for my merlin hint hint. i'm thinking of a backward P shape for the detent side. i might start on a set tonight if i have the right aluminum in the shed

Yes i did, needed to be drilled out slightly though. It lined up well with the hole in the other side for the original reflective eye.

Hey, when you guys get those breakbeam eyes, covers, and detents working make a few and sell 'em. I'm sure plenty of us would be willing to fork out the cash.

I'm betting the ones him and jared are making are going to match the FL body he's using... so probably won't fit right on a normal merlin.
