Anybody have a good tactic to memorizing how scales work? I realize that I will never be able to solo well unless I learn some, but I can never memorize them enough to be able to move up and down the fretboard completely.

about the scale memorization. What I do whenever I learn a new scale is I do a thing where I skip a note and then come back and hit it. For example in a G major scale you would play your G then hit the B then back to the A then skip the B and hit the C then hit the B and then skip the C and hit the D and so on and so forth. Also try to play the scale normally, then try to play it hitting each note twice, then three times then four, then three times each note, then two then normally, then move up a fret and repeat.

learn one movable block pattern to start out with and slowly memorize what notes are played on each string. If you can, just make a loop of something simple like a G chord and try soloing on a G major scale using just 2 strings in one position. When you feel comfortable with that, add a string until you can play the scale through all six strings. then move to the next G major scale pattern up the neck and repeat the process.

Since we're on the topic of scales I have a question. How do you know what scale to use over particular chords? I know that you use your major scale over major chords, and minor scale over minor chords. But what about Dorian scales, and maj7 chords? Is there a way to know what to use? And about that C6/9 chord...

generally dorian is played over minor 7th chords, but can be played wherever a natural or raised 6th is. Over a Maj7 chord you can pretty much play major, lydian, major pentatonic. you figure out what scales to use by what notes are in the chord and the available tensions, but to keep things simple, Major modes (Ionian, Lydian and Mixolydian (over dominant 7th chords)) can be played over major chords. The minor modes (Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian) are played over minor chords. Locrian is not used too often except for diminished and min7b5 chords.

I haven't been playing my guitar for a couple of months, but I just picked it back up...
I'm surprised at how difficult the first soft part of SRV's "Little Wing" is (the part right after the intro). I don't know why, but it took me a good half hour to get it down... but at least I have it down now. But I just know that I'll forget it by tomorrow
At least I'm learning though. It's been probably close to half a year since I've actually tried to learn a challenging song.

Word. Guitar Center dicked me around for about three weeks now. The one they had in store was broke so they gave me a black one until a new white one came in from the other store. Never came in, dicked me around more by saying they were getting one from Marshall. Marshall said they didnt have anymore so "they were making one," never got that one so the store manager is driving to the other store to pick it up today. I better get hooked up with some swag or i'll be pissed.

One of my favorite songs of all time.
Diary of a Madman - Ozzy
The beginning is pretty trippy since Randy changed his speed a couple times. I plugged the acoustic into the JCM800, no effects, direct line out the back and into the back of my computer with a 1/8" plug adapter haha.
Now I just need to bust out the electric. The thump at the end is where the electric would come in.
Constructive criticism welcome. Yes, I know the signal clipped a few times, but keep in mind, I'm plugged right into the computer....no interface or anything.

It is. It's like low-mid range gets hacked off through the computer.
