If your teacher accepts ST as a source she should not be teaching.

Well, I don't listen to mainstream negative crap, but here is my answer:

Rap is written about the already existent culture. There was just as much violence before rappers wrote about it. The only way to make the rap change is to change the culture it is based off of. Saying rap has a negative effect would be like saying punk music makes everyone against the establishment. The music is based on the pre-existing culture, it does not make people commit crimes.

I highly doubt that. I read somewhere that 72-75% of rap songs have lyrics that reference drugs, pre-marital sex, and violence. If that reflects how much of those issues are present in our society, then I think we have a serious problem.......

Are you retarded? Drugs, pre-marital sex, and violence are in 100% of American societies. Name one city in America that does not have those three things... minus the hick towns that don't count.

You act like hick towns don't have those things...

Most rap is based on real life situations. Sex, drugs, and violence happen every day.

I'm not saying they're not in our societies. I'm talking about populace. I doubt that 70% of people in this country commit violent crimes or sling crack...... And if you're going to claim 100%'s here, you can't say certain cities don't count. That's retarded in and of itself.

I know not everyone commits violent crimes or sells drugs, but in the society the rappers grew up in they obviously witnessed these things. Rappers base stuff on what they have seen, not what they think will happen.

Maybe they should stop being retards and go get an education then. Just because someone lives in a bad area does not mean they are programmed to be the same. Anyone can get out of a bad area and go to school, or get a good job if they want. Most people are too ****ing lazy to do this however.

By appealing to the same lifestyle they "grew up in," assuming you are correct. However, I doubt that you are. Which rapper's mom just died? Wasn't she a college professor? I think someone coming from a family of some sort of success (such as the aforementioned) can do something more productive then yell about ****ing *****es, shooting people and doing drugs.

Aahhaha, Kanye doesn't rap about any of that. He was influenced by Common, Talib, Mos, and all them.

Just because rappers talk about drugs and violence doesn't mean that they partake in drugs and violence.

Short answer is, yes it glorifies bad things. But so do movies, network TV, video games, etc. If we all didn't have some forms of entertainment that glorify bad things we'd be pretty damn bored, admit it.

The rap I listen to is actually quite positive and neutral. I think your thesis statement should be, "Does this gangbanger culture influence our youth?" type of question.

Quotes taken directly from his songs:

Drug dealin jus to get by stack ya money till it gets sky high

Police watch me smoke my weed, count my G's

You know what the Midwest is?
Young & Restless
Where restless (*****s) might snatch your necklace
And next these (*****s) might jack your Lexus
Somebody tell these (*****s) who Kanye West is
I walk through the valley of the Chi where death is
Top floor the view alone will leave you breathless Uhhhh!
Try to catch it Uhhhh! It's kinda hard hard
Getting choked by the detectives yeah yeah now check the method
They be asking us questions, harass and arrest us
Saying "we eat pieces of **** like you for breakfast"
Huh? Yall eat pieces of ****? What's the basis?
We ain't going nowhere but got suits and cases
A trunk full of coke rental car from Avis

Now I ain't never tell you to put down ya hands
KEEP EM HIGH
And if ya losin yo high than smoke again
KEEP EM HIGH

Still I, built up the nerve to drop my *** up outta collllllll-ege

Then maybe I'll be able to give her dick all the time, and get her high

Get em high like noon, or the moon or room filled with smoke
A high filled with dope

It's a party tonight and ooh she's so excited
Tell me who's invited: you, your friends and my dick

Maybe one day girl we can bone
So you can brag to all your homies now

Would you like me to keep going? That was only about 4 or 5 songs.

While I'm laying back smoking on my cannabis

Ladies tired of gettin' ripped off by guys like this
And givin' head is like a whale, using the toothpick'
Well, I'm in the club for a limited time
Act now and get some action for $free.99
Later on I might charge for ménage
Heard her man was the boss of the floss
But she still want to toss me the drawers
And it ain't gon' cost me because she my caddy
Cuz she grabbed my golf balls in the club
And I'm still actin' calm than a mug
She asked "Can you drive me and the hunnies to where my Altima was?"
While we drive she tellin' me 'bout problems with her man
Baby I fully understand
Let me help you with a plan
While he trickin' off, don't get no rich *****
Give ME some head, that'll really piss hI'm off

"K I need a free hand mammogram
I got weed, drink, and a Handicam

Now beat that
And your mothers sayin “go to college”
So u finish college and its wonderful

And after all the partying and crazing
And don’t forget about that drug habit u picked up at school bein around your peers
Hey now you’ll get that 25 thou, job a year and
You’ll spend all your money on crack cocaine, but it’ll be you’re your money
No more borrowin money from mom for my high

If u continue to work at the GAP, after several interviews, Oh my god!
You’ll come in at an entry level position and when u do that
If u kiss enough ***, you’ll move up to the next level
Which is being a secretary’s secretary!
And boy is that great, you get to take messages for the secretary
Who never went to college
Shes actually the bosses niece, so now your apart of the family
You know what college does for you?
It makes you really smart man
All you kids want to talk in the back of the class not me, I listened, ok
I was a hall monitor, This was meant to be,
You know how many classes I took, extra classes extra classes
No I’ve never had sex but you know what, my degree keeps me satisfied
When a lady walks to me says “hey u know whats sexy?”
I say “no, I don’t know what it is, but I bet I can add up all the change in your purse very fast”.

Red and white One's, yeah that's my Kappa style

Alright, I was wrong about what Kanye said, but that just proves the point I was trying to make in the first place: He only rapped about what was in his society.

Anything that glorifies drugs, gangs, guns, fighting, premarital sex, can't be good . I'm not saying that all rap is like that, but in general it's not helping our cultural advancement.
