I think that (someone claiming to be) an ancestral Mayan will come up with the new calendar that starts then and post it on the internet on that day.

Well thanks for the compliment Psyco, even though you underestimated my age.

And @Old Timer.

I do know that you can argue that the Uncertainty Principle may just be a result of our "lack of scientific ability to account for these phenomena". I am going to do a lot more reading into it over the next few weeks, but for the time being I can't combat that claim.

And I do believe it because I believe in Free Will, or at least like to believe in Free Will. I can't respond to you right now on that, but I will eventually.

And @ the Aristotle thing. I have never heard that, and I'm not so sure thats accurate. I did a google search and couldn't find anything on that. I'd like it if you could post a source.

You'd like it if I could post a source??!! Did you not read my last post? Why must everything be a quote or a source for you? But if you insist: the source was whatever the name of that damn book was that I used in Philosophy 141 at Gladfelter Hall, Temple University; lecture class given by Prof. Rosenberg circa 1992. There's your source.

Are you kidding? When your making a claim about a philosophers beliefs you have to prove it. You cant prove somone said something just because you say they did.

And you learned this in 1992. Thats sixteen years ago. I dont want your "word" for it, I want some proof. Time to crack out that book and look it up.

So about these 2012 rumors. Which I don't believe at all. When in 2012? Will it be right after the ball drops on New Years eve? Or sometime during the year?

The uncertainty principle comes from an experiment that does not have a controlled environment. If the methods used to test a theory interfere with the theory, results are useless. At the subatomic level, Particles are so small that even light waves interfere with their path. Thus, by our measuring the velocity or the position, we throw off its natural course.

The problem with determinism is that it would take a substantially more amount of knowledge than "location, speed, and trajectory" about matter in our universe. We must first know the interactions between everything. If we can't even understand gravity, how can we predict how molecules act in environments such as black holes. If it is possible to know how everything works, it wouldn't be very difficult to predict the future.

I know how the earths rotation on its axis works, so i am able to predict the sun will rise tomorrow.

Haha, this seems reminiscent of the movie "The Omen" release date. Everyone thought for sure we were done for.

The question is if you can gather all of the variables that would affect the problem, will you be able to predict exactly what will happen.

If you believed yes, You're a determinist, and you don't believe in free will.

If you believed no, then you have free will, and I don't know what the term for you is. Anti-determinist?

I am wondering what religion you are in reference that believes that the world will end on 12/21/12? or what religion thought it was going to end on y2k?

i fear big spiders (i like to play with the wee lil ones). Well a lot of christians at my school think the world will end on that date. people thought the world was going to end on Y2K because somebody "missplaced" some zeros in a computer program...completely bogus, yet people actually thought they were going to die.
