First get a job so you can afford to continue playing (unless your are independently wealthy). Look for jobs in the OC (714) area code and don't discount the 818/805 areas either. I live in (818) land (woodland Hill, zip 91364) and am 35 - 40 minutes from some very good spots (California Paintball Park, Paintball Fury/USA, Warped) as well as an indoor Reball spot, 818Killbox. Not sure how old you are or income bracket, but rent is typically more affordable in the 818 and 714 than the 310/213/323 codes (unless you want to gang-up in Compton or Inglewood (near LAX). I'm assuming that you're in the 18-24 age bracket which also means that you'll want to live in a place taht isn't Blue-Hair Village. So places where there are universities can also be good areas for renting a room in a house. Long Beach is also an option and would put you nearer to Hollywood Paintball Park in Bellflower (zip 90706). Being as you're from Minnesota, you'll need to come with at least 3 months of cash reserves to cover the SoCal entrance fee: Gas $3.50/gal, 1st and last months rent deposit and security deposit, new clothes and a haircut to entice the ladies, $180/ month minmum for DSL/SAT/Playboy Channel/water&power (the essetials for an 18-24 SoCal'er). If you have a cell phone, no need to pay for a landline service in SoCal, But you might want to bump up your minutes if you're leaving your high school sweatheart back in the Gopher State. Anyway, that's my advice, take it or leave it. I hired a kid from Missouri 7 years ago who made the same pilgrimage that you are considering. He was looking to get into movie industry (not what I do) but was smart enought to have a plan 'B' in place. His Plan 'B' is technical sales for my company making $70K (yes, he's a college graduate). He lives in Venice Beach, pays $1,000/month rent, drives a 2005 Lexus and is going to marry a trophy wife who moved here from Georgia. I used to give the advice that you should live close to where you like to "play". But with traffic being what it is and gasoline heading toward $4.00/gal, My new advice would be to live closer to where you work so the daily commute doesn't burn you out or burn up your paycheck.
